The central government has approved a minimum support price (MSP) of Rs 2369 per quintal (Rs 2300 per quintal last year) for the common paddy crops to be grown in the kharif season of the 2025-26 agricultural marketing season.

The agricultural marketing season in India is from July to June.

Kharif crops refer to the crops sown with the onset of the southwest monsoon (June/July) and harvested before the onset of the winter season (October/November).

The MSP for the mandated crops for the Kharif season was approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) in a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and held in New Delhi on 28 May 2025.

Since 2018-19, the MSP on the mandated crops has been fixed at 1.5 times the All-India weighted average Cost of Production.

The highest increase in MSP compared to last year is Rs 820 per quintal for the nigerseed crop, followed by Rs 596 per quintal for Ragi, Rs 589 per quintal for cotton, and Rs 579 per quintal for Sesamum

What is the Minimum Support Price (MSP)?

  • The government of India announces the MSP for the mandated crops before the Kharif and Rabi agriculture seasons.
  • The government introduced it in the 1966-67 agricultural marketing season.
  • The central/state government agencies buy the crops from the farmer at the MSP.

Role of CACP (Commission for Agricultural Costs & Prices)

The central government set up the Commission for Agricultural Costs & Prices (CACP) in 1965.

It is an expert committee under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of india.

CAAP calculates the MSP of mandated crops and recommends them to the government.

CACP's recommendations are advisory, and the government can accept or reject its advice.

Mandated Crops under MSP

MSP for 22 crops and a fair and remunerative price (FRP) for sugarcane are recommended by CACP.

The mandated crops are;

  • Cereals -  Barley, Wheat, Paddy, Ragi, Sorghum, Pearl millet, Maize
  • Pulses- Moong, Chickpea / Gram, Lentil, Tur, Urad,
  • Oilseeds -Soybean, Peanut, Rapeseed Sunflower, Sesame, Safflower, Niger seed
  • Commercial crops -Copra, Sugarcane, Cotton, Raw jute

The Department of Agriculture and Cooperation, Government of India, recommends the MSP for Toria and De-husked coconut.

The MSP for Toria is based on the MSP recommended for Rapeseed/Mustard Seed, and the MSP for De-husked coconut is based on the MSP for Copra.
