Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first unit of the 1980 MW Ghatampur Thermal Power Project and four other thermal power stations in Uttar Pradesh on 30 May 2025. Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived at the Chakeri airport in Kanpur from Bihar on 30th May 2025. 

The Chakeri airport in Kanpur is an Indian Air Force station from where civilian flights are allowed.

At the airport, Prime Minister Modi met the family members of Shubham Dwivedi, who was killed by terrorists in Pahalgam, Kashmir on 22 April 2205. He met Shubham’s wife, Ashanya, and his parents, Sanjay Dwivedi and Seema Dwivedi.

Highlights of PM Modi’s Visit to Kanpur 

In Kanpur, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation of various projects worth Rs 47,573 crore and addressed a public rally. 

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was also present during the function attended by the Prime Minister in Kanpur.

Following is the list of important projects inaugurated by the Prime Minister.

Kanpur Metro Project 

  • The new underground section of the Kanpur metro project was inaugurated by PM Modi.
  • The commuters can now travel the 16 km-long Kanpur metro from IIT Kanpur to Kanpur Central.

Ghatampur Thermal Power Project 

  • Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the first unit of the Ghatampur Thermal Power Project.
  • The 1,980 MW Ghatampur Thermal Power Plant has three units of 660 MW each.
  • It is being built by Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Ltd (NUPPL).
  • NUPPL is a joint venture of  NLC India Limited and Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (UPRVUNL).
  • NLC India holds 51% stake in the joint venture while UPRVUNL holds 49%.

660 MW Panki Power Plant 

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi also inaugurated the new 600 MW unit of the Panki Thermal Power Plant.
  • The old power plant at Panki in Kanpur was closed in 2016, and a new unit was built. 
  • The Panki power plant is operated by the Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (UPRVUNL).

Jawaharpur Thermal Power Station

  • The Prime Minister virtually inaugurated the Jawaharpur Thermal Power Plant in the Malawan village of the Etah District of Uttar Pradesh.
  • It has an installed capacity of 1320 MW  with 2 units of 660 MW each.
  • It is operated by the Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (UPRVUNL).

Obra C Thermal Power Plant 

  • The Prime Minister virtually inaugurated the Obra C Thermal Power Plant in the Sonbhadra district.
  • It has an installed capacity of 1320 MW  with 2 units of 660 MW each.
  • It is operated by the Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (UPRVUNL).

Khurja Thermal Power Station

  • Prime Minister Modi virtually inaugurated the first unit of the Khurja Thermal Power Plant.
  • It is located in Khurja, Bulandshahr district of Uttar Pradesh.
  • The Khurja Thermal Power Plant has an installed capacity of 1320 MW with 2 units of 660 MW each.
  • THDC India Limited is building the Khurja Thermal Power Project.
  • The THDC India Limited is a joint venture between the Central government and the Uttar Pradesh government.
