The Braj Bhasha is a Western Hindi language. Braj is spoken by the people of the vaguely defined Braj (Braj Bhoomi) region of northern India, which was a political state during the Mahabharata War.
Ancient Hindu texts, such as the Bhagavata Purana, describe the kingdom of Surasena as extending over Braj. In modern India, this region is mainly located in the central-western state of Uttar Pradesh, the eastern edge of Rajasthan, namely Bharatpur, Karauli, Dirpur, and the southern edge of Haryana.
