UPSC IES/ ISS Vacancy 2025 has been announced by the UPSC through the UPSC IES/ISS Notification 2025. A total of 47 vacancies have been announced by the UPSC for the UPSC Indian Economic Service/Indian Statistical Service Examination, 2025. The number of vacancies announced is provisional and subject to change. The Government will provide reservations for candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC), Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), and Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD), as per applicable regulations.

UPSC IES/ISS Eligibility Criteria 2025 

Aspirants intending to apply for the examination must ensure that they meet all the eligibility requirements specified in the UPSC IES/ISS Notification 2025. The candidature of applicants will be considered purely provisional at every stage of the examination process, subject to fulfilling the prescribed eligibility criteria. Verification of eligibility with respect to original documents will only be conducted after a candidate qualifies for the Interview/Personality Test. 

The Commission undertakes this document verification process solely for those who successfully clear the final stage. Therefore, candidates are advised to carefully review the eligibility criteria before submitting their applications. The criteria cover aspects such as nationality, age limit, and educational qualifications. Refer to the detailed UPSC IES/ISS Eligibility Criteria 2025 below:

Nationality

A candidate must be either:-

(a) a citizen of India; or 

(b) a subject of Nepal; or 

(c) a subject of Bhutan; or 

(d) a Tibetan refugee who came over to India, before the 1st January 1962, intending to permanently settle in India; or 

(e) a person of Indian origin who has migrated to India from Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Burma, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, and Ethiopia, or Vietnam: 

  • Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (b), (c), (d) & (e) above shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India. 
  • A candidate who can provide a certificate of eligibility to able to be admitted to the examination. Offer of appointment to such candidates will be given only after the necessary eligibility certificate is given to him/her by the Government of India.

Age Limit & Relaxation

The UPSC IES/ISS Notification 2025 outlines the age limit criteria required for the UPSC Economic Service/Statistical Service Recruitment 2025. As per the notification, candidates must be at least 21 years old and should not exceed 30 years of age as of 1st August 2025. In other words, applicants should have been born between 2nd August 1995 and 1st August 2004 (both dates inclusive).

Additionally, age relaxation is applicable for candidates belonging to certain reserved categories. The details of age relaxation are provided below:

Indian Economic Service 

A candidate must hold a Post-Graduate Degree in Economics/Applied Economics/Business Economics/Econometrics from a University established by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India, or other Educational Institutes established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956, or a Foreign University approved by the Central Government from time to time.

Indian Statistical Service

A candidate must have a Bachelor's Degree in Statistics/Mathematical Statistics/Applied Statistics as one of the subjects, or a Master's Degree in Statistics/Mathematical Statistics/Applied Statistics from a University incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India, or other Educational Institutes established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956, or a Forerunner University.

UPSC IES/ISS Physical Standards

Candidates must be physically fit according to physical standards for admission to the Indian Economic Service/Indian Statistical Service Examination, 2025 as per Regulations given in Appendix III of the rules for the Indian Economic Service/Indian Statistical Service Examination, 2025 published in Gazette of India dated 12 February 2025. 

Number of Attempts

Candidates belonging to the general category can appear for the UPSC IES/ISS examination 6 times and for OBC candidates it is 9 times. There is no limit to attempts for SC/ST candidates. The candidates willing to attend the examination must satisfy all the eligibility criteria like age, nationality, and minimum educational qualification criteria.

UPSC IES/ISS Application Process

UPSC IES/ ISS Application Date 2025 has been announced by the UPSC. Candidates are required to apply online only by using the website from 12 February to 4 March 2025. Candidates can follow the below-mentioned steps to apply for the UPSC IES/ISS Recruitment 2025:-

  1. Go to the official Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) website.
  2. On the homepage, locate and click on the "Apply Online" tab, which is available in the top right corner.
  3. Select the option “One Time Registration (OTR) for Examinations of UPSC” and carefully fill in your details to complete Part I of the application process.
  4. Once the OTR process is successfully completed, your login credentials will be sent to your registered email address.
  5. Use the registration number and your date of birth to log in and proceed to Part II of the application form.
  6. Upload scanned copies of the necessary documents, including your recent photograph and signature, in the prescribed format.
  7. Submit the application fee as per your category through the preferred payment method.
  8. Carefully review all the details entered in the UPSC IES/ISS Application Form 2025. After verifying, tick the declaration box to confirm the accuracy of the information provided.
  9. Submit the UPSC IES/ISS Online Form 2025 and download/print the final submitted application for future reference.

Application Fees 

To complete the UPSC IES/ISS Application Form 2025, candidates must pay the prescribed application fee through one of the available payment methods. The fee can be deposited in cash at any branch of the State Bank of India (SBI), or paid online using Visa/Master/RuPay Credit/Debit Card, UPI Payment, or Internet Banking of any bank. It is important to note that the fee once paid is non-refundable under any circumstances, nor can it be held in reserve for any other examination or selection process.

UPSC IES/ISS 2025 Selection Process

Candidates have to pass each stage of the examination then they will proceed to the next stage of the selection process. The selection process is divided into two parts by the commission which is explained below. 

Part I- Written Examination

The written exam includes both objective multiple-choice questions and descriptive-type papers. The common papers on General English and General Studies for both the Indian Economic Service and the Indian Statistical Service will be subjective. All subjects will have conventional (essay) question papers. Candidates should be aware that the question paper will be in English and that they will be required to write in English only.

Part II- Viva voce (Interview)

The candidate will be interviewed by a board of competent and impartial observers who will have a record of his/her career. The purpose of the interview is to determine his or her suitability for the service for which he or she has applied. The candidate will be expected to have taken an intelligent interest not only in his or her academic subjects but also in events taking place around him or her,  both within and outside his/her own State or Country as well as in modern currents of thought and in new discoveries.  The Board will pay special attention to assessing intellectual curiosity, critical powers of assimilation, judgment, alertness of mind, social cohesion, character integrity, initiative, and leadership capacity.

Both IES and ISS candidates will take a written examination worth 1000 marks. Candidates for the India Statistical Service must write objective and descriptive papers. Descriptive papers include both short-answer and long-answer questions. Admit Cards for the Indian Economic Service (IES) and Indian Statistical Service (ISS) exams 2025 will be released by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). Candidates who have registered for this exam can obtain their UPSC IES Admit Card 2025 from the UPSC's official website, i.e. upsconline.nic.in. It is necessary to bring the UPSC IES/ISS Admit Card, as well as a valid photo ID proof, to the examination.
