The Rangpur-Sivasagar Historical Ensemble in Assam Added to UNESCO's World Heritage Tentative List

Assam's Ahom-era heritage just got a major nod on the world stage. The Rangpur-Sivasagar Historical Ensemble in Sivasagar district has been added to UNESCO's World Heritage Tentative List, announced by India's Permanent Delegation to UNESCO in Paris on September 4. It's a recognition long overdue for a landscape that tells the story of one of India's most enduring regional dynasties.

About the Rangpur-Sivasagar Historical Ensemble

1. Located roughly 360 km northeast of Guwahati, this ensemble captures nearly 600 years of Ahom rule over the Upper Brahmaputra Valley.
2. It spans two core areas: Rangpur, once called Che Muan or the "city of amusement," founded by Ahom king Swargadeo Rudra Singha in 1704, and Sivasagar itself.
3. What makes the site remarkable isn't a single monument but an entire living landscape: wetlands, rivers, palatial complexes, fortified structures, ceremonial grounds, massive water tanks, temples, and old road networks woven together. 
4. Three temple clusters stand out—the Joysagar, Gaurisagar, and Sivasagar groups, each built along the banks of large tanks. 
5. Add to this iconic structures like Talatal Ghar, Rang Ghar, Fakuwa Doul, Pohugarh, and the Namdang Stone Bridge, and you get a sense of the scale of Ahom engineering and architecture. 
6. The region's location also placed it on old trade routes linking Northeast India to East and Southeast Asia, giving it historical significance well beyond royal history alone.

Indian Properties on UNESCO's World Heritage Tentative List

Along with the Rangpur-Sivasagar Ensemble, three other Indian sites joined the list on the same day: 

• The Colonial Penal Settlement of the Andaman Islands
• Nicobarese Cultural Continuity in the Central Group of Nicobar Islands. 
• The Painted Haveli Towns of Shekhawati. 

This takes India's total tally on the Tentative List to 73 properties, split across Cultural (53), Natural (17), and Mixed (3) categories. Getting onto the Tentative List is a mandatory first step before any site can be considered for full World Heritage status. The Archaeological Survey of India was credited with its role in securing these four new entries, marking steady progress for India's heritage recognition efforts on the global stage.
