Ladakh built its first rock check dam on the Indus River at Upshi

India is set to build its first eco-friendly rock check dam across the Indus River at Upshi in Ladakh to boost local irrigation and water security. Farmers in Leh have long struggled to pull water from the Indus during sowing season, especially where the river cuts through deep gorges. 

Features of India's First Rock Check Dam on the Indus River at Upshi

1. What makes this structure interesting is its simplicity, natural boulders placed across the river, with no cement involved. 
2. Despite the low-tech approach, it's raised the water level by about 10 feet, enough to divert flow into the Igoo Phey irrigation canal. 
3. The dam holds roughly 40 million litres, water that can now reach village fields instead of being lost to a river running too low for pumps to work effectively. 
4. For farmers who previously timed their sowing around unreliable river levels, this is a direct fix to a problem that had persisted for years.
5. Developed under the "Sindhu Jal Samriddhi Abhiyan" to help local farmers irrigate dry farmlands during the spring sowing season

Indus Waters Treaty in Abeyance

There's a bigger policy backdrop here too. India currently holds the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance, and building retention infrastructure like this signals a shift toward using the river more actively for its own border communities rather than treating it purely as a shared resource under the old treaty framework. The Upshi dam, in that sense, is as much a statement of intent as it is a farming solution.

About the Upshi Project

The Ladakh administration is already working on more check dams along the Indus, with some under construction and others in the planning stage. A proposal sent to the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti requests approval for 36 check dams across the region, seven Himalayan Rock Check Dams planned for Leh, and 29 RCC check dams or weirs for Kargil. Together, these projects carry an estimated cost of over Rs 56 crore, marking one of Ladakh's larger pushes toward water security for its border-area farming communities.
