Diu is the 1st district in India to meet its energy demand from solar

The Diu district of the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu has become the first district in the country to meet its power energy demand entirely from solar energy.

This information was provided by Pralhad Joshi, Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, on 29 May 2025. 

Pralhad Joshi visited Diu on 29 May 2025 to review the implementation of the PM-Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana and assess the district's progress in adopting solar energy.
Praising the Diu district's achievements, the Minister said that Diu is a model for the rest of the country in the adoption and use of renewable energy.

11.88 MW Solar Power Capacity in Diu District 

• The energy requirement of the Diu district is met through the 11.88 MW installed solar capacity.
• Out of the 11.88 MW solar power, 9 MW is ground mounted and 2.88 MW is rooftop mounted. 
• The 9MW ground-mounted solar park is located in Fudam.
• The Fudam solar park has helped the district reduce transmission and distribution (T&D) losses. 
• This has led to lower electricity tariffs and electricity bills for consumers.

About PM-Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the PM-Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana in her interim 2024 budget speech on 1 February 2024.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi formally launched the scheme on 13 February 2024. 

Features of the PM-Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana

• It is a scheme under which households are incentivised to install solar panels on their rooftops. 

• The central government provide a subsidy for the installation cost of up to 3 KW solar panels.
• Banks offer collateral-free loans to households for the purchase of solar equipment.
• Banks offer low interest rates on loans. 
• The interest rate is  0.5% above the Reserve Bank of India's prevailing policy repo rate.
• The households are entitled to 330 units of free electricity per month generated by the rooftop solar panels..
