Saudi Arabia to host 2034 men’s FIFA World Cup

The world football governing body FIFA has awarded the 25th FIFA Men’s Football World Cup to Saudi Arabia. The decision to award the 2034 FIFA Men’s Football World Cup was taken at the Extraordinary FIFA Congress held in Zurich, Switzerland, on 12 December 2024.
All 211 members of FIFA attended the Extraordinary Congress virtually.
Saudi Arabia was the sole country in the race to host the 2034 FIFA Men’s World Cup.
The 23rd FIFA Men’s World Cup will be co-hosted by Mexico, Canada and the United States in 2026, and 48 teams will participate in the tournament.
First World Cup in Saudi Arabia
This is the first time that Saudi Arabia will host the FIFA Men’s World Cup. Saudi Arabia has proposed to hold the 25th World Cup matches in 15 stadiums in five cities.
The Saudi football team, also famous as Green Falcon, made its first appearance in the World Cup in 1994 and has played four World Cups.
This is the second time a West Asian country will host the FIFA Men’s World Cup. Qatar hosted the 22nd FIFA Men’s World Cup in 2022 which was won by Argentina.
Six Countries to host 24th FIFA Men’s World Cup 2030
The Extraordinary FIFA Congress also confirmed the hosting of the 2030 FIFA Men’s World Cup, to be hosted by six countries across three continents.
The 2030 World Cup marks the centenary of the FIFA Men’s World Cup, as the first World Cup was held in 1930 in Uruguay.
The hosts of the event are European countries -Spain & Portugal and the African country of Morocco.
Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay will host one match each of the 2030 World Cup as part of the centenary celebration.

The world football governing body, FIFA, organises the senior men’s football World Cup, popularly known as FIFA Men’s World Cup.
The inaugural edition was held in Uruguay in 1930 and was won by Argentina.
It is held every four years and was not held in 1942 or 1946 due to the Second World War.
Brazil has been the most successful team with 5 title wins in 1958, 1962,1970, 1994 and 2002.
The second most successful teams are Germany and Italy, who have won it four times each.
Argentina is the defending champion, having won the 2022 edition.
