One of the most successful Indian Premier League (IPL) teams, Chennai Super Kings(CSK), appointed Ruturaj Gaikwad as its captain on 21 March 2024. The 17th IPL starts on 22 March 2024, with the defending champion CSK taking on Royal Challengers Bangalore at Chepauk, Chennai.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni as CSK Captain 

Mahendra Singh Dhoni was the longest-serving captain of CSK. M.S. Dhoni has the distinction of captaining  CSK in 235 of their 249 games in all competitions.

He was appointed captain of CSK in the inaugural IPL in 2008. In the 2022 season, Ravindra Jadeja was appointed captain of CSK, but Dhoni replaced Jadeja after 8 tournament matches. Dhoni was the captain of CSK in the 2023 season and under his captaincy, it won the IPL title for the 5th time, equalling the record with Mumbai Indians.

Under Dhoni's captaincy, CSK won IPL titles in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023.

M S Dhoni retired from international cricket in 2019 following the One Day World Cup held in England and Wales.

Dhoni also captained Rising Pune Supergiant for 14 games during CSK's two-year ban from the IPL in 2016 and 2017.

Ruturaj Gaikwad

The 27-year-old Ruturaj Gaikwad of Maharashtra has been a consistent performer for CSK. He has played 6 ODIs and 19 T20Is for India so far.

Chennai Super Kings 

It is one of the most successful IPL franchise teams. CSK is owned by N. Srinivasan and his family, who hold 28.14 per cent shares of CSK. 

N.Srinivasan is the former president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India. He was the president of BCCI from 2011-2013.

N.Srinivasan was made the first chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 2014.

Indian Premier League

The Indian Premier League is a 20-over cricket league that was started in 2008  by the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India).

8 franchise teams used to participate in the IPL, but in 2022, the number of franchises was raised by 10 teams. Currently, ten franchises are participating in the IPL. 

They are the Chennai Super Kings, Gujarat Titans, Lucknow Super Giants, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, and Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings have won the title 5 times each.

CSK are the defending champions.
