The newly sworn-in government of Mark Carney in Canada has appointed Anita Anand of Indian origin as the country’s Minister for Foreign Affairs. Prime Minister Mark Carney and his 28-member Council of Ministers were sworn in on 13 May 2025 after his Liberal party emerged as the largest party in the recently held Parliamentary election. Four people of Indian origin, including Anita Anand, have been included in Mark Carney’s government.
Mark Carney and his Council of Ministers were sworn in by the Governor General Mary Simon in Ottawa, the capital of Canada.

Prime Minister Mark Carney called for an early parliamentary election in Canada after he was sworn in as the 24th Prime Minister of Canada in March 2025, after Justin Trudeau resigned.

The term of the House of Commons is five years.

This helped Mark Carney, who inherited a deeply unpopular government from Justin Trudeau, as Canada rallied behind Mark Carney.
Opposition Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre and Jagmeet Singh, leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP), lost their seats.
The Liberal Party of Mark Carney won 170 seats in the 343-member House of Commons.
Results on three seats have been challenged in the court, and the results are awaited.
Anita Anand, who was a minister in the earlier Justin Trudeau government, was appointed the Minister for Foreign Affairs. She is the first Hindu woman to be appointed as the country’s foreign minister.
She took her oath on the Bhagavad Gita and represents Oakville East in the House of Commons..
Her mother is from Tamil Nadu, and her father is from Punjab.
