The Government of Tripura has allotted a plot of 2.36 acres of land to the National School of Drama(NSD) to set up a permanent campus in the state. A memorandum of understanding was signed between the state government and the NSD on 28 September 2023 in the state capital,Agartala.
The complex will be set up at Ranirbazar in West Tripura district.
The National School of Drama has set up the National School of Drama Theatre-in-Education Wing Tripura in collaboration with the Department of Information & Cultural Affairs and Higher Education, Government of Tripura at Agartala in 2011.
It started its operation in 2012 and offers a one-year residential certificate course in Theatre-in-Education. It admits students from Tripura and the rest of India .
One of the aims of the Theatre-in-Education Wing is to train and prepare teachers for Theatre.
Presently, the Theatre-in-Education wing is housed at Nazrul Kalakshetra Complex in North Banamalipur area in Agartala, Tripura.
The National School of Drama was set up by Sangeet Natak Akademi as one of its units in 1959.
In 1975, it was separated from Sangeet Natak Akademi and made an independent entity under the Societies Registration Act 1860.
It is fully financed by the Union Ministry of Culture.
The NSD is one of the foremost theatre training institutions in the world and the only one of its kind in India.
