The central government has set up a powerful new panel called the High-Level Committee on Banking for Viksit Bharat. Over the next six months, this team will study how Indian banks work and suggest big changes to help build a developed India by 2047.
To reach its goal of becoming a fully developed nation by the 100th year of independence, India needs a world-class banking system. This new committee will find performance gaps, study global banking standards, and create a plan to make local banks safer, faster, and more accessible to everyone.
Former Central Vigilance Commissioner Suresh N. Patel leads the newly formed group as Chairperson. The government selected top financial leaders and regulatory experts to help guide the process:
The panel will work together for six months before submitting its final recommendations to the Finance Ministry.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman first announced this initiative during her Budget speech. Strong banks act as the backbone of any growing economy. They lend money to new businesses, offer agricultural loans to farmers, safeguard family savings, and keep money moving through local communities.
As India grows rapidly, banks must evolve to meet the country’s expanding financial needs.
The committee will focus on five core areas to reshape the financial sector:
1. Modernize Everyday Banking Rules
The panel will review existing banking habits and safety rules (prudential norms). Members will study top international banks to see which global best practices Indian institutions can adopt safely.
2. Update Banking Laws for All Banks
The team will inspect the legal frameworks that govern different financial institutions, including:
They will suggest law updates that cut through red tape and make banking services easier for everyday customers.
3. Build Globally Competitive Banks
The panel will recommend structural changes to help Indian banks compete directly with major global financial giants. These upgrades will help local institutions stay financially strong during global market shifts.
4. Expand Financial Access for Everyone
Financial inclusion means giving every citizen—regardless of income or location—easy access to basic accounts, loans, and payment systems. The panel will create strategies to simplify rural banking and lower service fees.
5. Boost AI and Secure Digital Banking
Technology is rapidly changing how people send and store money. The panel will create a roadmap for integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and new digital tools into daily bank operations. To protect users from online scams and hackers, the committee will also recommend strict cybersecurity protocols.
Modern banks do much more than store money. They help entrepreneurs start companies, create new jobs, support rural farmers, and power modern industries. By creating a modern, safe, and tech-driven banking network, India takes a major step toward its target of becoming a developed nation by 2047.
