New Guinness World Record Set in 'City of Music' Gwalior Art and Culture 4 min read

1500 people performed tabla in the 'Taal Darbar' in Gwalior, City of Music, setting a Guinness World Record for the most persons performing tabla at the same time. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav, Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, and Assembly Speaker Narendra Singh Tomar witnessed the historic performance. Chief Minister Yadav stated that 25 December will be designated as 'Tabla Divas'.

  • The 'Tabla Darbar' festival program was organised at Karna Mahal of Gwalior Fort on the evening of 25th December.
  • The Guinness Book Of World Records team of three was present to personally supervise and record the 'Tabla Darbar' performance at Gwalior Fort.
  • The concert was part of the annual 'Tansen Samaroh' music festival in Gwalior. 
  • The local artists participating in the 'Tabla Darbar' event were undergoing continuous training at Raja Mansingh Tomar Music University, Gwalior, to perform in this record-setting event.

Tansen Samaroh

  • The annual five-day music festival 'Tansen Samaroh' is in its 99th year.
  • The festival honours the great 16th-century musician Mian Tansen.
  • It is being organised by the Culture Department's Ustad Alauddin Khan Music and Art Academy in conjunction with the District Administration Gwalior.

Tansen 

  • Tansen, son of a poet and musician, was one of Gwalior's early protégés.
  • He studied under Swami Haridas in the early 16th century, who performed Dhrupad but dedicated his poetry to Krishna rather than Vishnu.
  • Tansen studied and perfected the Gwalior gharana technique under the renowned Sufi saint Mohammad Ghous, and he served as court musician to King Ram Chandra Singh of Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, for many years.
  • Tansen's musical ability and knowledge spread and Akbar requested him to join his court musicians at the Mughal court.
