National Cadet Corps (NCC) and Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) signed MoU to enhance peaceful use of nuclear energy. NCC and NPCIL together will organize various awareness programs across the country for this.

Signing of MOU:

  • This agreement was signed on March 21, 2024 in New Delhi. It was signed by NCC Director General Lt Gen Gurbirpal Singh and NPCIL Executive Director BVS Shekhar.

Key points of the MoU:

  • NPCIL will educate NCC cadets in this initiative. Thereafter will provide resource persons for regional engagement with NCC during camps and various activities.
  • This MoU will provide an opportunity to the cadets to visit various NPCIL facilities across the country.
  • This will provide first-hand experience on the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, its technical and technological aspects.

NCC cadets will become aware and responsible youth:

  • Director General, NCC described the MoU as one of the initiatives of NCC to broaden the horizon of cadets. Between the two, more aware and responsible youth will be prepared. The Director General said that 15 lakh NCC cadets have the potential to influence the thinking of youth across the world.
  • The Director General expressed confidence that the cadets will play an important role in making the awareness campaign on peaceful uses of nuclear energy a successful initiative.

About National Cadet Corps (NCC):

  • The National Cadet Corps (NCC) serves as the youth organization affiliated with the Indian Armed Forces.
  • The headquarters of NCC is New Delhi.
  • NCC was formed in 1948.
  • It is open to school and college students on a voluntary basis as a tri-service organization. NCC encompasses the Army, Navy, and Air Force, where cadets undergo fundamental military training in small arms handling and drill exercises.
  • It was formed under the Indian Defence Act 1917 with the aim of meeting the shortage of personnel in the army.
  • In 1920, following the passage of the Indian Territorial Act, the 'University Corps' was replaced by the University Training Corps (UOTC).
  • The aim of replacing the University Corps with the University Training Corps (UOTC) in 1920 was to elevate the UTC's status and increase its appeal to young individuals.

About Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL):

  • NPCIL (Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited) is an Indian public sector undertaking headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
  • NPCIL is a wholly-owned entity of the Government of India and is tasked with the responsibility of generating nuclear power for electricity production.
  • It is operated by the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE).
  • Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited was indeed established in September 1987 under the Companies Act 1956. 
  • NPCIL aims to design, construct, operate and maintain nuclear power stations for power generation in pursuance of the plans and programs of the country.
