Three time World Blitz chess champion Alexander Grischuk of Russia won the Open Blitz title of the Tata Steel Chess India 2023 held in Kolkata , West Bengal on 9 September 2023. Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Uzbekistan came in second place.
The Tata Steel Chess India 2023 was played in both Rapid and Blitz format . The women’s event of the tournament was held from 31 August - 4 September 2023 while the Men’s event was held from 5-9 September 2023 in Kolkata, West Bengal.
Amongst the India players R Praggnanandhaa was the best performer in the Open Blitz section of the tournament . He finished in third place ,Arjun Egrashi came fourth but India’s No.1 D Gukesh finished at the eight place .
The three -time world blitz champion Grischuk suffered the only loss of the tournament when he was defeated by the rising Indian chess star Arjun Erigaisi in the 13th round.
This was the first time that no Indian male player was a winner in either Rapid or Blitz event. The first edition of the Tata Steel Chess India was held in 2018. In every edition of the Tata Steel Chess India there has been at least one Indian male player winner in either Rapid or Blitz event . The only exception is the year 2019 when it was part of the Grand Chess Tour where both Rapid and Blitz event scores were combined.It was won by Magnus Carlsen.
