Google Launches AI-Based Agricultural Information Tool for India

Google DeepMind's India-developed agricultural AI models are now expanding beyond the country, with 11 nations across Asia-Pacific and Africa testing their outputs. For exams covering science & technology, agriculture, and government initiatives, here's what you need to know.

Google DeepMind's India-First AI Models

Google DeepMind has built two satellite-imagery-based AI models, ALU (Agricultural Landscape Understanding) and AMED (Agricultural Monitoring & Event Detection), designed to analyse farmland and track agricultural activity. Both models were developed with India's farming landscape as the starting point, but their use has now spread to 11 countries across Asia-Pacific and Africa. Organisations can access these models either through APIs or as a data layer on Google Earth, where the ALU layer has reportedly become one of the most widely used layers globally. The work behind these models comes from Google DeepMind's AnthroKrishi team, led by Alok Talekar, who focuses on agriculture and sustainability research.

From Mapping Fields to Supporting Farmers

1. CarbonFarm uses the ALU API with Gemini to map field boundaries and support low-carbon rice farming, targeting 2 million hectares by 2030.
2. Terrastack built a spatial intelligence platform using ALU and AMED, mapping over 140 million hectares of farmland to help lenders assess credit without physical field visits.
3. In Telangana, the ADeX platform uses these models for digital agriculture services covering over 5 million farmers; its Krishivaas pilot gives localised alerts on crop stress, weather, and pests.

AI Moves into Water Management

1. Karnataka's Water Resources Department combines ALU and AMED with weather and remote-sensing data to monitor about 2.6 million hectares of irrigated land, improving decisions on water use across river basins.
2. Google is partnering with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on geoAI4stats, aiming to integrate these models into FAO's global CROPGRIDS database to strengthen food security and agricultural planning worldwide.
