4th Indo-US Tri-service Tiger Triumph 2025 starts at Visakhapatnam

The 4th edition of the India-United States(US) Tri-Service Tiger Triumph exercise commenced in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, on 1 April 2025. The third edition of the Tiger Triumph was also held in Visakhapatnam in March 2024.

The 4th edition of the Tiger Triumph exercise will be held in Visakhapatnam and the Bay of Bengal from 1 -13 April 2025.

Last month, in March 2025, the Indian Navy participated in the five-nation Sea Dragon exercise hosted by the US Navy off the Guam coast in the western Pacific Ocean.

Nature of the Tiger Triumph Exercise

The tri-service Tiger Triumph is an amphibious Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) exercise.

In an amphibious exercise, the three wings of the armed forces- the Navy, Air Force, and the Army will jointly conduct operations to land troops on shore from ships.

The aim of the exercise is to improve the interoperability of all three branches of the armed forces in conducting amphibious operations.

At the Tiger Triumph exercise, the Indian armed forces and the American armed forces will jointly work to conduct an amphibious exercise focused on Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR).

The exercise will focus on developing- 

• interoperability for conducting HADR operations; 
• formulation of Standard Operating Procedures,to establish a Combined Coordination Center (CCC) that would enable rapid and smooth coordination between Indian and US Joint Task Forces during exercises and crisis/contingencies.

Opening Ceremony and Schedule of the 4th Tiger Triumph Exercise 

The Opening ceremony of the 4th edition of Tiger Triumph was held onboard the INS Jalashwa. INS Jalashwa is an Austin-class amphibious transport ship, which the Indian government bought from the United States of America, and it was earlier known as USS Trenton.

The exercise will be conducted in two phases- Harbour and Sea Phase.

Harbour Phase- from 1 -7 April 2025 at Visakhapatnam. It will include an opening ceremony and will focus on increasing the comradeship between the two forces. It will include sports events, training visits, social interactions, etc.

Sea Phase-  from 8-13 April 2025. A joint amphibious operation will be conducted between the Indian and the US forces. 

The Indian Army and the US Marines will establish a joint command and control center at Kakinada Naval Enclave to monitor the landing of the forces. The Indian Air Force’s Rapid Action Medical Team (RAMT) and the US Navy medical team would also establish a joint medical camp to provide medical aid.

Being a tri-service exercise, all three branches of the Indian Armed Forces are participating in the exercise.

Indian Navy -  It has deployed INS Jalashwa, Gharial, Mumbai, and Shakti with integral helicopters and landing crafts. The Navy has also deployed its long-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft P-8I.

Indian Army - Troops from 91 Infantry Brigade and 12 Mechanised Infantry Battalion are participating.

Indian Air Force - It has deployed its transport aircraft C-130,  MI-17 Helicopters, and its Rapid Action Medical Team (RAMT).

United States - It has deployed its Naval ship  Comstock and Ralph Johnson with troops of the US Marine Division on board.
