ITBP's 62nd Foundation Day Parade Ceremony in Dehradun, Uttarakhand

The 62nd Foundation Day Parade Ceremony of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) is scheduled to be attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. On November 10, the parade is planned to take place in Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand. 

About Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP)

• Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) is one of the Central Armed Police Forces that reports to the Ministry of Home Affairs.
• It is in charge of guarding the 3,488 km of the India-China border. It stretches from the Karakoram Pass in Jammu and Kashmir to Jechap La in Arunachal Pradesh, as well as Sikkim, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and the Union Territory of Ladakh. 
• The ITBP Border Outposts are located between 9,000 and 18,750 feet above sea level, with a temperature drop of (-) 45 degrees.

Origin of ITBP

• The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) was established in 1962 as a response to the Sino-Indian War.
• It was intended to be stationed along India's border with the Tibet Autonomous Region of China.
• The ITBP was established under the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Act of 1949. 
• Later, the ITBPF Act was passed by parliament in 1992, and its regulations were developed in 1994.

Major Functions of ITBP

• Vigilance on the northern borders
• Detection and prevention of border violations
• Promotion of a sense of security among the local population
• Checking illegal immigration, trans-border smuggling and crimes. 
• Anti Naxal operations 
• UN peacekeeping operations: A national centre for UNCIVPOL training has been set up at ITBP Camp, Tigri and New Delhi to provide systematic training to Indian police officers for deployment in UN missions.
• Assistance during Kailash Mansarovar Yatra: The ITBP has also been providing security, communication and medical cover to the pilgrims during the Annual Kailash Mansarovar Yatra since 1981. 
• Security of some sensitive installations of national importance throughout the country, which include 
  • Rashtrapati Bhawan, 
  • Vice President House, 
  • Rumtek Monastery (Sikkim), 
  • Tihar Jail (New Delhi), 
  • Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration at Uttarakhand
  • various sensitive installations in Chandigarh (Punjab) and Jammu.
