International Youth Day: Empowering the Future

Every year 12 August is observed as International Youth Day to bring youth issues to the attention of the international community and to celebrate the potential of youth as partners in today’s global society.

In India National Youth Day is observed on 12 January . This day is the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.

According to the United Nations half of the people on our planet are 30 or younger, and this is expected to reach 57% by the end of 2030.

Background to this Day 

• The idea for International Youth Day was proposed in 1991 by the young people who were gathered in Vienna, Austria, for the first session of the World Youth Forum of the United Nations System.

• In 1998, a resolution proclaiming 12 August as International Youth Day was adopted by the first session of the the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth.The conference was hosted by the Government of Portugal in cooperation with the United Nations at Lisbon.

• The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution on 17  December 1999 to observe 12 August as International Youth Day 

• The first International Youth Day  was observed in  2010.
