India’s total installed power capacity reached 500 gigawatts

As of September 30, 2025, the country’s total installed power capacity has crossed 500 gigawatts, reaching 500.89 gigawatts. There is a capacity of 256.09 gigawatts from non-fossil fuel sources and 244.80 gigawatts from fossil fuel-based sources.

• India’s power sector has achieved two historic milestones that reflect the nation’s continued progress toward a clean, secure, and self-reliant energy future.
• As of September 30, 2025, the country’s total installed power capacity has crossed 500 gigawatts, reaching 500.89 gigawatts. This achievement reflects years of strong policy support, investment, and teamwork in the energy sector.
• Non-fossil fuel sources (renewable energy, hydro, and nuclear): 256.09 gigawatts - more than 51% of the total.
• Fossil fuel-based sources: 244.80 gigawatts - about 49% of the total.

In renewable energy:

• Solar energy - 127.33 gigawatts
• Wind energy - 53.12 gigawatts
• During the financial year 2025-26 (April–September 2025), India added 28 gigawatts of non-fossil capacity and 5.1 gigawatts of fossil fuel capacity—showing how rapidly the share of clean energy is increasing.

A record day for renewable energy

• On July 29, 2025, India reached its highest-ever share of renewable energy in electricity generation. On that day, renewable energy met 51.5% of the country’s total demand of 203 gigawatts.
• Solar energy generation: 44.50 gigawatts
• Wind energy generation: 29.89 gigawatts
• Hydropower generation: 30.29 gigawatts
• This means that, for the first time, more than half of India’s electricity in a single day came from green sources—a remarkable sign of transformation.

Achieving national targets ahead of schedule

• With this progress, India has achieved one of its key COP26 Panchamrit targets—having 50% of installed power capacity from non-fossil fuel sources—five years ahead of schedule.
• This success reflects India’s leadership in the clean energy transition, achieved while maintaining a stable and reliable power grid.
• India’s focus on renewable energy is creating new job opportunities in manufacturing, installation, maintenance, and innovation—benefiting both rural and urban youth.

• PLI Scheme: Promoting domestic manufacturing of high-efficiency solar PV modules.
• PM-KUSUM: Establishing grid-connected solar power plants and solarizing agricultural pumps.
• Green Hydrogen Mission: Aims to make India a global hub for the production, use, and export of green hydrogen.
• Green Energy Corridor: Strengthening transmission networks for large-scale renewable energy evacuation.
• Renewable Purchase Obligation: Mandates distribution companies to purchase a specified minimum percentage of electricity from renewable sources.
