Dhankhar Addresses the 51st National Convention of Company Secretaries

The Vice-President of India, Jagdeep Dhankhar, addressed the 51st National Convention of Company Secretaries on 2 November 2023. The Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel, President of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI), Manish Gupta, and other dignitaries were present.
The three-day 51st National Convention of Company Secretaries is being held in Pandit Deendayal Handicraft Complex, Badalalpur ,Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, from 2-4 November 2023. It is being organized by the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI).
Speaking on the occasion, Vice-President Dhankhar said that the Company Secretaries were the 'Custodians of corporate governance'. He said that the Company Secretaries are the "key pillars of governance and compliance within organisations, upholding the principles of transparency, ethics and accountability in corporate India".
The Vice President expressed the hope that “India would become the fifth largest economy in the world in 2023, leaving behind countries like Britain and France. We have no doubt that by the end of this decade India would become the third strongest economy in the world, leaving behind Germany and Japan.”
The annual National Convention of Company Secretaries brings together the professionals of India and abroad. Over 1,100 professionals are attending the event. The delegates attending the meetings are from different industries. It includes corporate leaders and C-level executives, Company Secretaries, Board Members and Directors, Chartered Accountants, Cost Accountants, Senior Bureaucrats, and Government Officers, Academicians, and other professionals in Corporate Governance etc.
Theme of the 51st National Convention of Secretaries
The theme of the 51st National Convention of Secretaries is "India@G20: Empowering Sustainable future through Governance & Technology".
Section 203 of the Companies Act 2013 makes it mandatory
To appoint a whole-time Company Secretary as Key Managerial personnel.
A Company Secretary's primary responsibility is to ensure that the company comply with the statutory and regulatory requirements. It also has to ensure that the decisions of the board of directors of the company are implemented.
Only a member of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India can be appointed as a Company Secretaries.
The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) is a statutory body set up by the Companies Secretaries Act 1980.
The ICSI is a recognised professional body in India to develop and regulate the Company Secretaries profession in India.
ICSI functions under the Union Ministry of Corporate Affairs.
ICSI has its headquarters in New Delhi.
ICISI has four Regional Offices in New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai and 72 Chapters across India.
