Ravi Agrawal Reappointed as CBDT Chairman for Six Months

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has given the green light to reappoint Ravi Agrawal as Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) on a contract basis, effective July 1, 2026, running through December 31, 2026, or until further orders, whichever comes first. The decision comes a day after his scheduled retirement on June 30, 2026.

About Ravi Agrawal

Ravi Agrawal is a 1988-batch senior Indian Revenue Service officer who first took charge as CBDT chairman in June 2024, initially for a one-year term. That stint was later extended by another year, taking him through to June 2026. Now, with this fresh six-month contract, he continues at the helm of India's apex direct tax policy body. His reappointment has been approved in relaxation of standard recruitment rules, on terms applicable to re-employed central government officers.
