Narendra Modi sworn in for a historic third time as Prime Minister

Narendra Damadordas Modi was sworn in as the Prime Minister of India for the third consecutive time by President  Droupadi Murmu on 9 June 2024. He was administered the oath of office of secrecy by President Droupadi Murmu in a simple ceremony in the Rastrapathi Bhawan in New Delhi. He is the second person after Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru to be sworn in as the Prime Minister of India for the third consecutive time.

Along with the Prime Minister, 71 ministers - 30 cabinet ministers and 41 ministers of state, five with independent charge, were also administered the oath of office by President Murmu.

Narendra Modi equals Pandit Nehru’s Record 

Narendra Modi equalled the record of India’s first prime minister, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru records of being sworn in as the prime minister of India for the third consecutive time after the implementation of the constitution.

• Pandit Nehru became the prime minister of India on 15 August 1947 as India gained independence. 
• The first Lok Sabha election was held in 1951-52, and Pandit Nehru was sworn in as Prime Minister by President Dr Rajendra Prasad in 1952.
• He was again sworn in as Prime Minister in 1957 after the Congress party won the majority in the second Lok Sabha(1957-62). 
• He again became the Prime Minister in 1962 after the Congress party secured a majority in the third Lok Sabha (1962-67). 

Narendra Modi was sworn in as the 15th Prime Minister of India in 2014 after his  Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led coalition National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured a majority in the 16th Lok Sabha (2014-19). 

Narendra Modi was the chief minister of Gujarat before he was sworn in as the Prime Minister by President Pranab Mukherjee.

Narendra Modi was again sworn in as Prime Minister a second time when the ruling coalition NDA secured a majority in the 17th Lok Sabha. He was sworn in by the President Ram Nath Kovind.

Indira Gandhi’s record of being Prime Minister Four Times

• Indira Gandhi holds the record for being the Prime Minister of India four times. 
• She became the Prime Minister for the first time in 1966 after the death of Lal Bahadur Shastri. 
• Under her leadership the Congress party won a majority in the fourth Lok Sabha (1967- 1971) and she was sworn in as the Prime Minister .
• Her party won a thumping majority in the fifth Lok Sabha (1971-77), and she was the Prime Minister during this time(1971-1977).
• She was again sworn in as the Prime Minister in 1980 after her party won the majority in the seventh Lok Sabha (1980-84).

Many foreign leaders were invited to the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Modi and his 71-member Council of Ministers. The event was attended by

• Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe, 
• Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, 
• Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay
• Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, 
• Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda', and
• Seychelles Vice-President Ahmed Afif.

Political Parties Representation in the New Council of Ministers 

A strong 72 members of the Council of Ministers, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was sworn in. The Prime Minister is a member of the Council of Ministers and is the head of the Council of Ministers.

• 31 members were sworn in as the Cabinet rank minister(including the Prime Minister), and 41 were sworn in as the Minister of State, of which 5 with Independent charges.
• Of the 72 members of the Council of Ministers including the Prime Minister ,61 members are from the Bharatiya Janata Party , and 11 are from the allies of the NDA. 
• Telugu Desam Party, Janata Dal(United), Janata Dal (Secular), Jitan Ram Manhji’s party Hindustan Awami Morcha Party and Chirag Paswan’s  Lok Janshakti Party have been given one cabinet post each.
• The Nationalist Congress Party of Ajit Pawar, Shiv Sena(Shinde group) , Rashtriya Lok Dal of Jaynat Chaudhray and Apna Dal (S) have been given one Minister of State berth each.

Women Ministers in Modi’s Council of Ministers 

Among the 72 ministers (including the Prime Minister), seven are women ministers. They are as follows with their party and rank :

• Cabinet Minister  Nirmala Sitharaman (BJP) from Tamil Nadu,
• Cabinet Minister Annapurna Devi (BJP) from Jharkhand,
• Minister of State Savitri Thakur (BJP) from Madhya Pradesh. She is a tribal leader.
• Minister of State Nimuben Bambhaniya,(BJP) from Gujarat.
• Minister of State Raksha Khadse (BJP) from Maharashtra, 
• Minister of State Shobha Karandlaje(BJP) from Karnataka. 
• Minister of State Annupriya Patel (Apna Dal), From Uttar Pradesh.

Uttar Pradesh has the highest representation in the Council of Ministers

Among the States/Union Territories, Uttar Pradesh has the highest representation and the largest number of seats in the Lok Sabha, eighty.

• Haryana, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, three each,
• Assam, Jharkhand, Telangana, West Bengal and Kerala two each,
• Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Jammu and Kashmir Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand Punjab and Chhatisgarh one each.

Seven Former Chief Ministers in Modi’s Council of Ministers

The newly constituted Council of Ministers of Prime Minister Modi includes seven former state chief ministers. They are as follows:

Youngest and Oldest member of Modi’s Cabinet

Youngest ever to be a Union Cabinet Minister.

K Ram Mohan Reddy of the Telugu Desam party is the youngest ever to become a cabinet minister in India. He is 36 years old and a three-time member of parliament from the Srikakulam constituency of Andhra Pradesh. He broke the record of Smriti Irani (BJP), who became a cabinet minister at the age of 38 in 2014.

Oldest ever to be a Union Cabinet Minister 

Jitan Ram Manji former chief minister of Bihar and the leader of the Hindusran Awami Morcha is the oldest ever member to become a cabinet minister.79 years old Jitan Ram Majhi was elected as a Lok Sabha member for the first time from Gaya constituency of Bihar in 2024. 

Jitan Ram Manhji broke the record of Najma Heptullah (BJP), who became cabinet minister at the age of 74 years in 2014 under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
