Mathews Became The 1st Player To Be Out By 'Time Out' In Cricket History

Sri Lankan middle-order batsman Angelo Mathews has become the first cricketer in the world to be out under the 'Time Out' rule in the history of international cricket. Angelo Mathews was given time out for arriving late than scheduled in the match being played against Bangladesh in the ODI World Cup 2023.

This incident was the first time in the 146-year history of international cricket that a batsman was given time out.

Background About The Sri- Lanka & Bangladesh Match:

The Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka match was played on 6 November during the ODI World Cup 2023. The 38th match of the World Cup 2023 was played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. In this, Bangladesh won the toss and invited Sri Lanka to bat.
During the batting of the Sri Lankan team, Angelo Mathews came to bat in the 25th over after the dismissal of Sadira Samarawickrama. During this time, Mathews had a problem with his helmet. After which Mathews ordered another helmet from the pavilion.
Seeing this delay, Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan appealed for out against Mathews. Mathews was given out after talks between umpire Marais Erasmus and Richard Illingworth.
However, Bangladesh eliminated Sri Lanka from the race for the semi-finals of the World Cup 2023 by defeating Sri Lanka by 3 wickets.
After the 38th match of the World Cup 2023, both Sri Lanka and Bangladesh were out of the tournament.
In that match, the Sri Lankan team, after losing the toss came to bat first and set a target of 280 runs for Bangladesh on the basis of Charis Asalanka's century. Bangladesh chased this score in just 41.1 overs with the help of brilliant half-centuries from Nazmul Hussain Shanto (90) and Shakib Al Hasan (82).

Sri Lankan batsman Angelo Mathews has become the first cricketer in the world who was given timed out in the history of international cricket. Mathews didn’t play a single ball & had to return to the pavilion. As he asked the dressing room for a new helmet, Shakib and the Bangladesh team appealed for "time out" and the appeal was accepted by the umpires.

What Is ICC's Time Out Rule?

Time out is also considered a type of out in the rules made by ICC. According to ICC 40.1.1, the batsman has to come in to play the next ball within 3 minutes after the fall of the wicket. In this context, it is noteworthy that in this World Cup this time has been fixed at 2 minutes.
Under this rule, if the batsman delays in coming to the crease, after an appeal by the bowling team, the batsman will be given out.
