Indian performance at the Asian Games 2023

India has sent a 655 strong team for the 19th Asian Games to be held in the Chinese city of Hangzhou from September 23 to October 8, 2023. The Asian Games was originally scheduled to be held in 2022 but were postponed due to COVID-19 COVID-19-related lockdown in China. The Indian team will participate in 41 out of 61 disciplines at the 19th Asian Games.45 countries, including India, are participating in the 19th Asian Games. 

Though officially the games will start on September 23, cricket, football, volleyball, and beach volleyball events have started from September 19. For the first time, Indian men’s and women’s cricket teams will participate in the Hangzhou games.

Indian performance in the Asian Games 

• The first Asian Games was held in New Delhi in 1951. India has participated in all the Asian Games. 
• At the New Delhi Games, India won a total of 51 medals, including 15 gold, 16 silver and 20 bronze. India finished second behind Japan, which won 60 medals. It remains India’s best finish in the medal tally, at the Games.
• India’s best medal haul came at the Asian Games 2018 in Jakarta. India won a record 70 medals. 
• The first gold medal for India was won by swimmer Sachin Nag in 100 metre freestyle at the New Delhi edition in 1951.
• Roshan Mistry became the first Indian woman to win an Asian Games medal when she won the silver in the 100m sprint at the 1951 Asian Games.
• India has won 672 medals at the Asian Games, including 155 golds, 201 silvers and 316 bronze.
• India has won at least one gold medal in every Asian Games, and they are the 5th most successful nation at these Games. 
• PT Usha, nicknamed the ‘Payyoli Express’, is the most successful Indian athlete at the Asian Games with 11 medals. She won four gold and seven silver medals.
• India has dominated Kabaddi events since its introduction in the 1990 Beijing Games. India has won gold in 7 out of the 8 editions. India had to settle for silver in the 2018 Jakarta Games, where it lost to Iran in the final.
