At the 22nd Asian Under-20 Athletics Championships, India delivered a historic performance in Hong Kong, finishing second on the points table with a tally of 19 medals—comprising 10 gold, 5 silver, and 4 bronze.
As the runner-up, this performance marked India's best-ever showing in this continental track and field championship held outside its home country. Mogali Venkatram won the gold medal in the men's 800-meter race.
Earlier, the women's 4×100-meter relay team—comprising Kajal, Bhavna, Aarti, and Nipam—won the silver medal. The women's relay team also set a Junior National Record with a timing of 45.05 seconds.
A total of 48 Indian athletes (30 men and 18 women) participated in the event held in Hong Kong, China, from May 28 to May 31.
This competition also served as a qualifying event for the World U-20 Athletics Championships 2026. The World U-20 Athletics Championships 2026 is scheduled to be held from August 5 to 9 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, USA.
The competition was first established in 1986 as the Asian Junior Athletics Championships. Prior to this, India had finished in second place on only two occasions—in 1992 and 1996—when the championships were hosted in New Delhi.
This performance also surpassed India's previous best overseas showing, achieved at the 2024 Asian U-20 Athletics Championships held in Dubai. In that competition, the team had finished in third place with a total of 29 medals, including seven gold, 11 silver, and 11 bronze.
