The Ministry of External Affairs announced on October 16, 2026 that senior diplomat Sudhakar Dalela will be India’s next Ambassador to Nepal. He will replace Naveen Srivastava and take charge once Nepal gives its formal consent to the appointment.
Sudhakar Dalela is a 1993-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer. He is currently Secretary (Economic Relations) in the Ministry of External Affairs, a post he took up on September 1, 2025.
In this role, he looks after India’s economic diplomacy and development cooperation. He also works on strengthening ties with African countries and handles India’s engagement on global economic issues. His work covers emerging strategic technologies as well. Dalela represents India as Sherpa in BRICS, IBSA and I2U2. A Sherpa is the government’s lead official who prepares the ground for summit-level talks.
Dalela has handled Nepal and Bhutan matters in the MEA’s North Division. He was Director (North) in 2006-07 and returned as Joint Secretary from 2016 to 2019. He then served as India’s Ambassador to Bhutan from 2022 to 2025, which gave him direct experience of diplomacy in the Himalayan region.
India and Nepal are currently focused on trade, cross-border connectivity, energy cooperation and regional security. Dalela’s background in economic diplomacy and neighbourhood affairs could help move these areas forward. His earlier work on Nepal and Bhutan also means he already knows the region’s concerns and priorities.
