Maldives expressed deep gratitude to India for approving the rollover of its ₹30 billion (approx. $360 million) currency swap facility. The financial extension highlights growing economic stability and diplomatic trust between both Indian Ocean neighbors.
Maldivian Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam publicly thanked External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and the Government of India for extending this vital liquidity support under New Delhi's Neighbourhood First policy.
The currency swap arrangement operates under the Framework on Currency Swap Arrangement for SAARC Countries.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) originally signed the agreement during Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu’s state visit to India in October 2024.
A currency swap allows a recipient country to exchange its local currency for a foreign currency or Indian Rupees at fixed exchange rates.
Writing on X, Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam stated that the decision reflects the enduring partnership, shared values, and mutual goodwill guiding relations between the two nations.
The rollover follows recent diplomatic efforts to rebuild economic ties between Male and New Delhi.
By offering flexible financial backstops, India reinforces its commitment to regional stability and strategic cooperation across the Indian Ocean.
