Peter Magyar, who was once a close loyalist of Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, has ended his mentor’s 16-year rule. His Tisza Party achieved a massive victory in the recently held parliamentary elections.
After counting votes from 97.35% of polling stations, Magyar’s center-right party secured 138 seats and 53.6% of the votes in the 199-member parliament.
According to official results, Orbán’s Christian nationalist Fidesz Party won 55 seats with 37.8% of the votes.
Election winner Peter Magyar confirmed that work is underway to form a new Hungarian government by mid-May. He has held discussions with President Tamás Sulyok.
Veteran Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán accepted defeat in the parliamentary elections, ending his 16-year tenure.
Magyar’s major victory will be a relief for leaders in other parts of Europe, where Orbán had long been seen as a challenge for the European Union (EU).
However, this result will come as a setback for US President Donald Trump, who had supported the nationalist and pro-Russia leader during the campaign.
Peter Magyar, whose surname literally means “Hungarian,” was born in March 1981 in Budapest into a family of lawyers.
He is also the grand-nephew of Ferenc Mádl, who served as Hungary’s President from 2000 to 2005; this was the period when Orbán completed his first term as Prime Minister (1998–2002).
After entering politics, Magyar worked as a faithful Fidesz official. However, his relationship with the party deteriorated in 2024 due to a controversy.
He emerged as an opposition leader in 2024 and rapidly rose to become the leader of the moderate right -wing Tisza Party.
Hungary is a landlocked country in Central Europe. Budapest is its capital and largest city. It lies mostly in the Carpathian Basin and is bordered by Slovakia (north), Ukraine (northeast), Romania (east and southeast), Serbia (south), Croatia and Slovenia (southwest), and Austria (west).
Hungarian is the official language and is one of the few European languages that does not belong to the Indo-European language family.
Budapest is the capital and largest city, as well as the cultural and economic center of the country.
Hungarians call their country Magyarország, meaning “Land of the Magyars,” and they are unique in Europe for speaking a language unrelated to other major European languages.
