Former President John Mahama elected new President of Ghana

Former President and opposition candidate John Mahama was elected as the President of the African country of Ghana in the recently held Presidential election. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang was elected as the Vice-President of the country. She is the first woman to be elected as the Vice-President of Ghana.

John Mahama will succeed the incumbent President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on 7  January 2025.

2024 Presidential Election in Ghana 

Presidential election was held in Ghana on 7th December 2024 to elect a new President and Vice President.

The main Presidential candidates were the incumbent Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party and the opposition candidate, John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress party.

John Mahama was elected as he secured 56.6% of the votes compared to 41.6% secured by Mahamudu Bawumia.

The incumbent President, Nana Akufo-Addo, did not contest the election as Ghana’s 1992 constitution limits the term of a President to two terms.

Second Presidential term for John Mahama

John Mahama was first elected as the President of Ghana in 2012 but lost the 2016 Presidential elections to Nana Akufo-Addo. 

Mahama's term in office was marred by charges of corruption, frequent power cuts and an economy in deep trouble. 

Mahama again lost the 2020 Presidential election to President Nana Akufo-Addo.

John Mahama will be sworn in on 7 January 2025 for a term of four years.

Constitutional System In Ghana 

The present 1992 Constitution promulgated in 1993 establishes a multi-party democratic system in the country.

It provides for a United States of America-type Presidential system where the President is both the Head of the State and the Government.

The people directly elect the President for a term of four years and have a limit of two terms.

Ghana's President is the Head of the State and the Government.
