Donald Tusk Elected New Prime Minister Of Poland

On December 11, 2023, Poland's parliament 'Sejm' has elected Donald Tusk as its new Prime Minister. The current Prime Minister of Poland, Mateusz Morawiecki, lost the vote of confidence in the parliament.

During the voting held on 11 December 2023 in the Sejm, the Parliament of Poland, 248 votes were cast in favour of Donald Tusk, while 201 MPs voted against him.
Earlier, on December 11, 2023, Poland's outgoing Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki lost the vote of confidence in the lower house of parliament (Sejm) by 266-190.
This ended the nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party's eight-year tenure in power.
A coalition of opposition parties won the general elections held in Poland on 15 October 2023. Poland's October elections saw a record 74% voter turnout.
Tusk will present his Cabinet to parliament on December 12 and outline his governance programme. After this, members of the Polish Parliament will place their vote of confidence on it.
The new government led by Donald Tusk will be sworn in by Polish President Andrzej Duda on 13 December 2023.

The Parliament of Poland is a bicameral legislature. It comprises an upper house (Senate) and a lower house (Sejm).
Both houses of the country are located in the Sejm and Senate Complex in Warsaw. The Constitution of Poland does not refer to the Parliament as a single body but only to the Sejm and the Senate.
Members of both houses are elected by direct elections, usually every four years. The Sejm has 460 members, while the Senate has 100 senators.
A bill must first be approved by both houses to become law, but the Sejm can override the Senate's refusal to pass a bill.
