Claudia Sheinbaum :First elected Woman President of Mexico

Mexico has elected a woman president for the first time in its 200-year history. According to the provisional result of the Mexican election commission, Claudia Sheinbaum has taken an unassailable lead over her nearest presidential rivals. Mexican President and mentor of Claudia Sheinbaum , Andrés Manuel López Obrador, congratulated Claudia on her victory.
Elections were held on 2 June 2024 in Mexico to elect a new president and more than 20,000 political positions, including all seats in the lower house and the senate of the Mexican Parliament and regional and municipal offices.
She will be sworn in as the President of Mexico on 1 October 2024.
Three candidates were in the race for the Mexican presidency. Claudia Sheinbaum of the ruling Morena party, opposition party candidate Xochitl Galvez and the third candidate, a male Jorge Álvarez Máynez.
The fight was mainly between Caludia Sheinbaum and Xochitl Galvez, backed by the main opposition party, PRI, which has ruled Mexico for 71 years.
According to the National Electoral Institute of Mexico, Sheinbaum has secured between 58.3% and 60.7% of the vote, Xóchitl Gálvez between 26.6% and 28.6% of the vote, and Jorge Álvarez Máynez had between 9.9% to 10.8% of the vote. Sheinbaum’s Morena party is also expected to win a majority of seats in both the chambers of Congress (Mexican parliament).
In Mexico a candidate needs 50 percent votes to win the Presidential election.
61-year-old Claudia Sheinbaum is a climate activist and former mayor of Mexico City.
She is a Jew who has been elected president in a country which is predominantly catholic Christians. She is the first Jew to become the president of Mexico.
She is a staunch supporter of Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador is a leftist leader and is considered the second most popular leader in the world after Narendra Modi.
However, he was unable to contest the elections because the Mexican constitution allows a person to be president only once.
Mexico is a federal country with 31 states. According to the Mexican Constitution of 1917, the President is the head of the executive branch of the government.
The President is directly elected by the people for a six-year term. A person can become president only once in Mexico.
There is no provision for a vice president in Mexico. In case of the president's death or resignation, the legislature elects a new provisional president.
Mexico's official name is the United Mexican States. Although it is located in North America, it is culturally considered part of Latin America.
The country has the largest Spanish-speaking population in the world.
Its capital, Mexico City, is one of the most populated cities in the world.
