The Indian Navy has successfully rescued the Iranian fishing vessel 'Azini' from the clutches of armed pirates off the north-eastern coast of Somalia. The complex anti-piracy operation lasted over 48 hours and ended with the safe release of all 20 crew members. The mission recorded zero casualties or injuries.
The rescue combined seamless coordination between an Indian Navy warship, maritime surveillance aircraft, Marine Commandos (MARCOS), and an Indian Air Force (IAF) transport aircraft. This mission highlights India's operational capability to counter maritime piracy threats and protect seafarers across the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
Armed pirates hijacked the fishing vessel Azini off the northeastern coast of Somalia. Security analysts feared that the pirates intended to convert Azini into a mother ship.
Pirate groups use mother ships as mobile floating bases to venture deep into international sea lanes and launch surprise attacks on commercial merchant vessels. This threat made a rapid military response crucial for regional shipping safety.
Upon receiving the distress signal, the Indian Navy directed a mission-deployed warship to intercept the hijacked vessel while maritime reconnaissance aircraft provided real-time aerial surveillance.
The 48-hour multi-domain rescue operation ended in total success. Commandos freed all 20 crew members safely without a single injury. Securing the ship neutralized the immediate piracy risk and prevented further attacks against commercial trade ships in the region.
This mission reinforces India's position as a First Responder and Preferred Security Partner in the Indian Ocean Region.
The Indian Ocean carries essential global trade routes and energy supplies. By executing high-risk anti-piracy missions, the Indian Navy continues to protect seafarers, safeguard commercial shipping, and maintain stability across vital international sea channels.
