The 11th edition of the joint military exercise “Exercise Mitra Shakti-2025” between India and Sri Lanka began at the Foreign Training Node, Belagavi, Karnataka. This exercise is being conducted from 10 to 23 November 2025.
The 10th edition of the India–Sri Lanka joint military exercise Mitra Shakti was held at the Army Training School, Maduru Oya, Sri Lanka. The exercise was conducted from 12 to 25 August 2024.
The Indian contingent of 170 personnel is mainly represented by soldiers of the Rajput Regiment. The Sri Lankan side is represented by 135 personnel, primarily consisting of soldiers from the Gajaba Regiment. The exercise also includes 20 Indian Air Force and 10 Sri Lankan Air Force personnel.
The objective of the exercise is to jointly rehearse sub-conventional operations under Chapter VII of the United Nations mandate. The exercise aims to coordinate joint responses during counter-terrorism operations.
Both sides will practice tactical operations such as raids, search and destroy missions, heli-borne operations, etc. Additionally, Army Martial Arts Routine (AMAR), Combat Reflex Shooting, and Yoga will also be part of the training curriculum.
Exercise Mitra Shakti - 2025 will also employ drones and unmanned aerial systems in addition to helicopters. Both sides will jointly rehearse securing helipads and casualty evacuation during counter-terrorism operations.
The combined efforts will focus on achieving better interoperability among soldiers and minimizing risks to life and property while keeping the interests and agenda of the United Nations paramount during peacekeeping operations.
Major bilateral exercises between the two countries include SLINEX (Navy) and Mitra Shakti (Army), which are held alternately in both countries. India is Sri Lanka’s largest trading partner, a major FDI source, and a top tourist contributor.
India has provided grants and concessional loans for key infrastructure and digital projects (such as housing, Kankesanthurai Port, and Digital ID).
