210 Indian Peacekeepers Receive United Nations Medal in South Sudan

A total of 210 Indian peacekeepers, including six women and seven staff officers, have been awarded the United Nations Medal for their exceptional service with the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). The recognition was announced by UNMISS in Juba, South Sudan, honouring the Indian contingent's courage and commitment shown during crises, medical emergencies, and lifesaving missions.

UNMISS described the moment as a proud one for India's Blue Helmets, highlighting how the Indian peacekeepers' courage and compassion have continued to protect lives and advance peace in the region. Their contributions have included responding to emergencies, supporting medical operations, and carrying out missions aimed at protecting local communities amid difficult conditions in South Sudan.

India Is the Second-Largest Contributor of Uniformed Personnel to UN peacekeeping

India has a long and significant history with UN peacekeeping operations. 

1. Since 1948, more than 200,000 Indian personnel have served in 49 of the 71 UN peacekeeping missions established worldwide. 
2. This service hasn't come without sacrifice; more than 160 Indian peacekeepers have lost their lives while serving under the UN flag over the years.
3. India has also played a pioneering role in promoting women's participation in peacekeeping. In 2007, it became the first country to deploy an all-women contingent to a UN peacekeeping mission, sending an all-women Formed Police Unit to Liberia.
4. This unit handled round-the-clock guard duty, conducted night patrols in the capital Monrovia, and helped build the capacity of the Liberian police force.

This latest recognition in South Sudan adds to India's long-standing record of contribution to UN peacekeeping, with Indian personnel continuing to support global efforts toward protecting civilians and advancing peace in conflict-affected regions around the world.
