PM Modi Concludes First Ever Official Visit to Croatia, 4 MoUs Signed

Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded his visit to the European nation of Croatia with the signing of four Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) between the two countries.

The Prime Minister was on a three-nation visit to Cyprus, Canada, and Croatia from 15 to 19 June  2025.

The Prime Minister attended the Outreach session of the 51st G7 summit meeting, which Canada hosted in Kananaskis, Alberta, Canada, from June 15 to 17, 2025.

Highlights of PM Modi’s Visit to Croatia 

• First Indian Prime Minister to visit Croatia.
• When PM Modi's plane landed in Croatia, the Croatian Prime Minister, Andrej Plenković, received him at the Zagreb airport.
• Prime Minister Modi received a warm welcome in Zagreb, where Croatians chanted Sanskrit shlokas. Croatian artists performed a short Kathak dance in his honour.
• He also met Zoran Milanović, the President of Croatia, in Zagreb.
• Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Andrej Plenković held delegation-level talks and discussed bilateral and global issues.
• Prime Minister Modi thanked Prime Minister Plenković for support to India in the wake of the terror attacks in Pahalgam, Kashmir on 22 April 2025, in which terrorists killed 26 tourists.
• Four MoUs were exchanged between the two countries in the presence of both Prime Ministers.

Agreements and MoUs 

The following four MoUs were exchanged between India and Croatia.

• Cooperation between two nations in the field of agriculture and allied sectors,
• Cooperation in Science and Technology,
• Cultural Exchange Program,
• Establishment of Hindi chair at University of Zagreb, Croatia.

India-Croatia Relations 

India established diplomatic relations with Croatia in July 1992.

The total trade between the two countries was $306.03 million (January -November 2024).

During this period, Indian exports were $251.59 million, while imports from Croatia were $54.44 million.

Indian culture and philosophy are popular in Croatia.

Ivan Filip Vezdin of Croatia was the first European scholar to publish a printed Sanskrit grammar in 1790. In 1999,a plaque was unveiled in his honour at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.

About Croatia 

It is located in the Balkan Peninsula of Southeast Europe.

It was an earlier part of Yugoslavia, but it gained independence in 1992 following the civil war and the disintegration of Yugoslavia.

Croatia is part of the Western military alliance, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) and the European Union (EU).

On 1 January 2023, it became the 20th country in the EU to adopt the common currency, the euro.
