‘International Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Awareness Day’ is celebrated every year on 5 March. The day is celebrated to promote awareness and understanding of disarmament issues, especially among the youth.

History of the Day:
Resolution proposal was brought to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in the year 2021 for the International Day for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Awareness.
In this context, on 7 December 2022, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution for. Declared 5 March every year as "International Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Awareness Day".
The first International Day for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Awareness was observed on 5 March 2023.
Significance of the day:
The Day is a reminder of the ongoing threat posed by weapons of mass destruction.
It provides a forum for global action and promotes international cooperation on disarmament and non-proliferation efforts.
By raising awareness and promoting dialogue, the day helps create a safer world for all.
About UN Disarmament Week:
‘United Nations Disarmament Week’ is celebrated every year from 24 to 30 October. This week is organized to raise awareness about the importance of disarmament.
It is an annual event organized by the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs. The occasion promotes the abolition of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction.
UN Disarmament Week was initiated by the UN General Assembly in 1978 during its 10th special session on disarmament. The resolution establishing the week called on all member states to raise awareness of the importance of disarmament.
About the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA):
UNODA originated as the Department for Disarmament Affairs in January 1998.
It was originally established in 1982 on the recommendation of the Second Special Session of the UNGA on Disarmament (SSOD II).
