Important Days Observed in June 2025 and their Themes Important Day 22 min read

Various competitive exams ask questions regarding days and their themes. At the global level, the United Nations and its various agencies designate a year, specific days, and weeks to mark particular events or topics and promote, through awareness and action, the objectives of the United Nations and its various organisations.

The Government of India, as well as its Ministries, also designates a specific year, days, and weeks with a particular theme.

2025 as a Year 

The United Nations has designated 2025 as the Year as follows;

International Year of Quantum Science and Technology

  • 2022 marks the 100th anniversary of the development of the methods of quantum mechanics that have led to its prominence in both science and technology today. 

International Year of Peace and Trust

  • Before 2025, the  United Nations observed 2021 as the International Year of Peace and Trust.

International Year of Glaciers

  • The United Nations has also decided to observe the 21st of March every year as the World Day for Glaciers.
  • The first World Day for Glaciers will be observed on 21st March 2025.

International Years of Cooperatives 

  • Theme: "Cooperatives Build a Better World" 
  • The year-long celebration of the International Day of Cooperatives started in India.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi started it on 25 November 2024 in New Delhi at the ICA Global Cooperative Conference 2024.

Union Ministry of Defence 

  • The Union Ministry of Defence has decided to celebrate 2025 as the “Year of Reform”

Important Day in June 2025

Some Important events are observed on a particular day of the week, and they do not have a fixed day. Some of the important events in June are as follows.

International Father’s Day (third Sunday)

International Father’s Day is observed on the third Sunday of June every year..

  • In 2025, it was observed on 15 June.
  • American Sonora Smart Dodd started it in memory of her father, William Smart. In 1910
  • In 1916, the American President Woodrow Wilson officially declared the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day.
  • Since then, it has been observed in various parts of the world.

Deafnessblindness Awareness Week 2025 (22-28 June)

Deafblind Awareness Week is observed each year during the last week of June in honour of Helen Keller, whose birthday is June 27.

  • In 2025, it will be observed from 22-28 June.
  • First - 1984

1st June    

Global Day of Parents

The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution in 2012 to observe 1st June as the Global Day of Parents.

  • First - on 1st June 2013.
  • 2025 Theme - Raising Parents  

World Milk Day 

The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations declared 1st June as World Milk Day.

  • First - on 1 June 2001.
  • 2025 Theme- Let’s Celebrate the Power of Dairy
  • (In India, National Milk Day is observed on 26 November)

3rd June 

World Bicycle Day 

The  United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution in 2018 to observe 3 June as World Bicycle Day.

  • First: 3 June 2018 

4th June  

International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression

The United Nations  General Assembly passed a resolution in 1982 to declare 4th June as the International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression.

  • It highlights the dangers faced by children in war /conflict areas.
  • First- on 4th June 1983

5th June 

The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution in 1972 to declare 5 June as World Environment Day.

  • First - on 5 June 1973.
  • 2025 Theme -  Beat Plastic Pollution

7th June 

World Food Safety Day 

The United Nations  General Assembly passed a resolution in 2018 to observe 7th June as World Food Safety Day.

  • First- on 7 June 2019
  • 2025 Theme: Food Safety: Science in Action

8th June

World Oceans Day

The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution in 2008 to declare 8th June as World Oceans Day.

  • First- on 8 June 2009.
  • 2025 Theme- Wonder Sustaining What Sustains Us 

12th June 

World Day Against Child Labour

The first World Day Against Child Labour was observed by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) on 12 June 2002 in Geneva, Switzerland.

14 June 

World Blood Donor Day 

First, on 14 June 2004, the World Health Organisation (WHO) encouraged people to donate blood voluntarily. 

  • Later in 2005, the World Health Assembly of the WHO adopted a resolution and declared 14 June as World Blood Donor Day.
  • Significance of the Day- Austrian biologist and immunologist Karl Landsteiner was born on 14 June 1886. He discovered that humans have four different types of blood groups: A, B, O, and AB. 
  • 2025 Theme: Give blood, give hope: together we save lives 

15 June 

Global Wind Energy Day 

The Global Wind Energy Day was established by the European Wind Energy Association in 2007.

  • In 2009, the European Wind Energy Association partnered with the Global Wind Energy Council to establish Global Wind Energy Day as a global event.
  • The aim was to raise awareness among people and policymakers about the importance of wind as a clean and renewable energy source.
  • First - 15 July 2007
  • 2025 Theme (India)- Pawan Urja: Powering the Future of India.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day was observed for the first time in 2006 by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse. 

  • On its request, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution in 2011 to observe 15 June as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
  • Individuals aged 60 and above are considered elders by the United Nations.
  • 2025 Theme: Addressing Abuse of Older Adults in Long Term Care Facilities: Through Data and Action

17th June  

World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought

  • The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution in 1994 to observe 17th June as World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought.
  • Significance - On 17 June 1994, the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification was adopted.
  • First - 17 June 1995

20 June 

World Refugee Day 

The genesis of World Refugee Day lies in African Refugee Day.

  • In 1975, the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) adopted a resolution to observe 20 May as African Refugee Day, paying tribute to the resilience of those who had been forcibly displaced in Africa due to conflict. 
  • Considering the success of African Refugee Day, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution in December 2000 to observe 20 May as World Refugee Day, coinciding with African Refugee Day. 
  • First -on 20 May 2001.
  • 2025 Theme- Solidarity with Refugees

World Sickle Cell Day 

The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution in December 2008 to observe 19 June as World Sickle Cell Day.

  • Sickle cell disease is a genetic disorder that affects the haemoglobin in red blood cells. 
  • Sickle cell disease is caused by the sickle-like shape of the patient's red blood cells, which sometimes fail to pass through the blood vessels, resulting in blockages.
  • Due to this, many parts of the body's tissue are unable to receive sufficient amounts of oxygen, causing complications and severe cases of anaemia.

21 June 

International Day of Yoga 

First proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his address to the United Nations General Assembly in September 2014.

  • On the proposal of India and supported by 175 countries, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution on 11 December 2014 to declare 21 June as the International Day of Yoga.
  • First - 21 June 2015.
  • 2025 ThemeYoga for One Earth, One Health

International Day of the Celebration of the Solstice 

  • The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution in June 2019 to observe 21 June as International Day of the Solstice.
  • First - 21 June 2019

World Music Day or Fête de La Musique 

Every year on June 21, on the occasion of the summer solstice, World Music Day, also known as Fête de La Musique, is celebrated. 

  • Started in France in 1982.
  • Significance - Organised by Jack Lang, then French Culture Minister, and Maurice Fleuret, Director of Music and Dance at the French Ministry of Culture, in 1982. 
  • Together, the two started the Fête de la Musique (festival of music) on the streets of Paris.
  • Soon, it spread all over the world.

World Hydrography Day 

The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution in 2005 calling upon the International Hydrographic Organisation to commemorate its foundation day as World Hydrography Day. 

  • The International Hydrographic Organisation was set up on 21 June 1921.
  • The International Hydrographic Organisation is an intergovernmental organisation that works to ensure all the world's seas, oceans and navigable waters are surveyed and charted.
  • First - 21 June 2006
  • 2025 Theme - Seabed Mapping Enabling Ocean Action.

23 June 

International Olympic Day 

The 42nd session of the International Olympic Committee, which met at St. Moritz, Switzerland, in 1948, approved the proposal to observe 23rd June as International Olympic Day.

  • The credit for the idea of an Olympic Day was given to Dr Josef Gruss of Czechoslovakia, who proposed celebrating 23 June as Olympic Day to promote the Olympic Idea. 
  • Significance - The International Olympic Committee was founded in Paris, France on 23 June 1894.
  • Pierre de Coubertin of France is credited with the revival of the modern Olympics.   
  • First - 23 June 1948

United Nations Public Service Day 

On 20 December 2002, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution designating 23 June as International Public Service Day.

  • First- on 23 June 2003.
  • 2025 Theme - Five Years to 2030: Accelerating Public Service Delivery for a Sustainable Future

International Widows Day 

The Loomba Foundation first observed International Widows' Day on 23 June 2005.

  • On 23 June 1954, Raj Loomba, a native of Punjab, lost his father, and his mother became a widow.
  • He set up the Loomba Foundation to raise awareness about the plight of widows in India and the world.
  • The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution on 21 December 2010 to observe 23rd June as International Widow Day.
  • First - on 23 June 2011.

24 June 

International Day of Women in Diplomacy

The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution on 20 June 2022  to observe 24 June as International Day of Women in Diplomacy. 

  • The resolution was introduced by Thilmeeza Hussain, the Maldives' Ambassador to the United Nations.
  • First - 24 June 2022
  • 2025 Theme -The power of women peacebuilders 

Passport Sewa Diwas (India)

Celebrated by the Ministry of External Affairs.

  • This day is celebrated to mark the enactment of the  Passports Act, 1967.
  • The act lays down the foundation of a sound legal framework for the issuance of Passports and other travel documents in India. 

25 June 

International Day for the Seafarers

The 2010 Manila Conference of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers adopted a resolution designating 25 June as the International Day of the Seafarer.

  • It is organised annually by the Geneva-based International Maritime Organisation (IMO), which is a specialised agency of the United Nations. 
  • First- on 25 June 2011.
  • Theme 2025- My Harassment Free Ship.

26 June 

International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking  or World Drug Day

The United Nations General Assembly on 7 December 1987 passed a resolution to observe 26 June as  International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

  • First - on 26 June 1988
  • 2025 Theme - Break the Cycle. #StopOrganisedCrime

27 June 

International Day of Deafblindness

The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution in June 2025 to observe 27 June as the International Day of Deafblindness.

  • Deafblindness is a combined vision and hearing disability suffered by a person.
  • Significance: This day commemorates the birth anniversary of the renowned American author Helen Keller (1880–1968), one of the most iconic figures in the deafblind community. 
  • First - 27 June 2025

Micro Small Medium Enterprise(MSME) Day 

On 6 April 2017, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution to observe 27 June as Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprise (MSME) Day.

  • First - on 27 June 2017.
  • 2025 Theme - Enhancing the role of MSMEs as drivers of Sustainable Growth and Innovation

29 June 

National Statistics Day 

National Statistics Day is observed in India on 29 June to commemorate the birth anniversary of Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis.

  • Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis was born on June 29, 1893, in Kolkata.
  • Prof P.C. Mahalanobis is known as the 'Father of Modern Statistics in India.' 
  • First- 29 June 2007
  • 2025 Theme- 75 years of National Sample Survey

30 June 

International Asteroid Day

The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution on 6 December 2016 declaring 30 June International Asteroid Day.

  • Significance—On 30 June 1908, an asteroid crashed over the Tunguska River region in Siberia, Russia, devastating a 2,150 square km area. It is the largest asteroid impact recorded in human history.
  • First- on  30 June 2017.

International Day of Parliamentarism 

The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution on 22 May 2018 to observe 30 June as the International Day of Parliamentarism.

  • Significance—The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) was established on 30 June 1889. It is the global organisation of various countries' national parliaments and the world’s first permanent international political organisation.
  • First - 30 June 2018.
  • 2025 Theme- Achieving gender equality, action by action
