Indian women's badminton team crowned Asia champions defeated Thailand

Indian women's badminton team crowned Asia champions defeated Thailand Sport 4 min read

Indian women's badminton team has won the title of Badminton Asia Team Championship 2024 on 18 February 2024. In the final of this championship played in Malaysia, the Indian Women's team defeated Thailand 3-2. This was the 5th edition of the championship being played since 2016.

Team played under the leadership of PV Sindhu:

  • PV Sindhu led the Indian team in this championship. The young and dynamic group of the Indian women's team won against two-time bronze medalists Thailand.
  • Two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu, who returned to the court after four months, defeated world number 17 Supanida Katethong in the first match. She gave India a 1-0 lead by winning the first singles match.

Won gold for the first time:

  • The Indian Women's Team has won a medal for the first time in the Championship. In this championship, India has won gold for the first time in any category (Men's and Women's).
  • Whereas the men's team has earlier won bronze in 2016 and 2020.
  • Young Anmol Kharab once again performed brilliantly and played an important role in the victory of Team India. India won its first gold medal by defeating Thailand 3-2 in a thrilling final.

Thailand team was not playing at full capacity:

  • Like most teams in the competition, Thailand were not playing at full strength. They competed without their top two singles players – world No. 13 Ratchanok Intanon and world No. 16 Pornpawee Chochuwong.

Anmol won a great victory:

  • The match was tied at 2-2 and in such a situation once again the entire responsibility was on Anmol Kharb. Anmol Kharab made India the champion with a victory over world number 45 Pornpicha Choeikeewong in the decisive third singles.

Indian men's team lost in the quarter finals only:

  • Before this, India had won two medals in the Badminton Asia Team Championship and both the medals were in the name of the men's team.
  • The Indian men's team had won bronze medals in the 2016 and 2020 editions. However, this year the men's team had to face defeat in the quarter-finals only.

About Badminton Asia Team Championships:

  • This championship started in the year 2016. The 1st Badminton Asia Team Championships was held at the GMC Balayogi Indoor Stadium in Hyderabad, India from 15–21 February 2016.
  • It was organized by the Badminton Asia Confederation.
  • Hyderabad was selected over Bangkok in the bidding process for the first Badminton Asia Team Championship.
