Indian Shooters Win Gold In 10m Air Pistol Team Event, AOQ, Jakarta Sport 4 min read

Indian shooter Varun Tomar clinched the gold medal in the men's 10m air pistol event of the Asian Olympic Qualifiers in Jakarta on January 8, 2024. Varun Tomar secured India's 14th Olympic quota with this win.

  • India started its campaign with three medals, including the team gold medal, on the first day of this continental competition.

India captured gold and silver medals:

  • Twenty-year-old Tomar topped the final with 239.6 points. While his compatriot Arjun Cheema won the silver medal with 237.3 points. Mongolia's Devakhu Enkhtaivan (217.2) won the bronze medal.

Gold medal in 10-metre air pistol team event:

  • Earlier, the Indian team of Tomar, Arjun and Ujjwal Malik topped the team event with 1740 points. Iran and Korea won silver and bronze medals in the same event, respectively.

Asian Olympic Qualifiers for Paris Olympics, Jakarta:

  • A total of 16 quota places for the Paris Olympics are at stake in this prestigious continental competition.

Capture of three out of four is possible for Indians:

  • There are four quotas in the 10m air pistol event for men and women, out of which Indian shooters can avail a maximum of three.
  • Isha Singh, Rhythm Sangwan and Surbhi Rao will compete in the women's 10m air pistol event, where India has yet to secure a quota for the Paris Games.

The decision of 256 medals in the Asian Olympic Qualifiers:

  • In this competition, around 385 shooters from 26 countries compete to get the Paris Olympic quota. Apart from this, they are also challenged to win 256 medals (84 gold, 84 silver and 88 bronze medals) in Jakarta's Senayan Shooting Range.
  • India has already secured 13 Olympic quota places in rifle, pistol and shotgun events before this competition.

All quotas achieved in Rifle:

  • India has secured all Paris Olympics quotas in rifle at the Asian Olympic Qualifiers held at the Senayan Shooting Range in Jakarta. Whereas three quotas have been obtained in pistol.

About Paris Olympics:

  • The 2024 Summer Olympic Games will be held from 26 July 2024 to 11 August 2024.
  • However, football and rugby competitions will start from July 24 and handball tournaments from the 25th.
  • Over the course of just three weeks, 329 events will be staged across 32 sports in which a total of 206 NOCs, including the Refugee Olympic Team, will compete.
  • ‘Breaking’ is the only sport in Paris 2024. Breaking made its inaugural appearance at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires in 2018.
  • Break-dancing, skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing were included in the list of sports at the Paris Olympics 2024.
