Indian American golfer Akshay Bhatia performed brilliantly in the play-offs and won the Valero Texas Open title on April 8, 2024. With this, Akshay Bhatia has made a place in the Augusta Masters to be held next month in May 2024.

Qualified for first major tournament:

  • Akshay Bhatia has qualified for a major tournament for the first time by winning the Valero Texas Open title.
  • Bhatia overcame Danny McCarthy in the play-off, who birdied eight of his last nine holes.
  • McCarthy had already secured a Masters spot by breaking into the world top 50 in 2024. McCarthy lost in a playoff to Viktor Hovland at the Memorial Tournament last year.
  • Twenty-two-year-old Bhatia (67) started the day with a four-shot lead. Then they were successful in taking a lead of six shots but McCarthy made a strong comeback due to which after 72 holes the score of both the players was 20 under.
  • Bhatia then won the title with a birdie on the first extra hole in the play-off.

Last players to qualify for Augusta Masters 2024:

  • This was literally the last spot left at the Augusta Masters. Bhatia secured the spot after facing off a serious challenge from Denny McCarthy, who birdied eight of the last nine holes at the TPC San Antonio here.
  • Bhatia's win fulfills a promise to mother, earns Masters entry.

Bhatia received over 1.6 million USD and 500 FedEx:

  • The win netted Bhatia more than US$1.6 million and 500 FedEx. Bhatia also qualified for the US Open with his second PGA Tour win. Bhatia has now reached number 34 in the world.
  • McCarthy birdied his last seven holes and eight of his last nine to shoot a nine-under 63 and move to 20 under.

Bhatia was successful despite shoulder problems:

  • The 22-year-old Bhatia was suffering from shoulder problems that required medical attention midway through the play-off hole.
  • Despite this, Bhatia made birdie and McCarthy, after a brilliant run, put his shot from 99 yards in the water.

Bhatia turned professional in 2019:

  • Bhatia, who turned professional in 2019, won the Barracuda Championship last summer. It was an extra event during the Open Championship. That's why he didn't get a Masters call.
