India and Lithuania held their 9th FOC in New Delhi Summit and Conference 3 min read

India and Lithuania held their 9th Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) on 21 November 2023 in New Delhi. In this FOC, many contemporary issues were discussed between the two countries.

Leadership of FOC:

  • The Indian side was led by Secretary (West) Sanjay Verma, and the Lithuanian side was led by Egidijus Meilunas, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania.
  • Both sides also agreed to hold the next round of FOC in Vilnius on mutually convenient dates.

Highlights of the 9th Foreign Office Consultations (FOC):

  • The 9th FOC provided an opportunity to review bilateral commitments and exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual interest, including the Ukraine conflict, India's presidency of the G20, cooperation in multilateral fora and UN Security Council reforms.
  • The two sides also discussed taking forward relations in areas such as trade and investment and cultural ties, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.

India and Lithuania relations:

  • India and Lithuania enjoy warm and friendly bilateral relations and regular exchanges take place at both political and official levels.
  • According to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, trade between India and Lithuania has increased in recent years, despite the adverse effects of the pandemic.

Current situation of Lithuania due to Russia-Ukraine war:

  • Lithuania is located between two autocratic countries. It is located between Latvia to the north and east, Belarus to the south and east, Russian enclave Kaliningrad and Russian ally Belarus to the west. 
  • Lithuania has long warned the world about the Russian threat.
  • Lithuania angered China by opening a representative office in Taiwan last year in 2021, while also allowing Taiwan to do the same in Lithuania.
  • China has reacted angrily to this development and is trying to punish Lithuania and the European Union economically.
  • Under these circumstances, the visit of Egidijus Meilunas as a representative of the Foreign Ministry of Lithuania is of great importance.
