The first international campus of IIT Delhi will commence its first academic session in 2024-25 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE). Initially, the IIT Delhi Abu Dhabi campus will offer undergraduate courses.
The IIT Delhi said that students can secure admission either through the Combined Admission Entrance Test 20024 or the Joint Entrance Test (JEE) 2024.
As part of the central government’s effort to internationalise the Indian education sector, the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) has set up two campuses outside India. IIT Madras has set up a campus in Zanzibar, Tanzania, which commenced its academic season in 2023-24.
IIT Delhi Abu Dhabi will start its academic season this year.
During the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) last year an agreement was reached to open an IIT campus in the UAE. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed during the visit between the IIT Delhi and the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK), the Ministry of Education, Government of India.
The IIT Delhi has signed an agreement with Zayed University to use its infrastructure till its own campus is built in Abu Dhabi.
For the 2024-25 academic year, IIT-Delhi Abu Dhabi will offer B. Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering and B. Tech. in Energy Engineering. 30 students will be admitted in each course. The classes will commence in August or September.
Indian Institute of India (IIT) was set up by the government of India to provide trained technical personnel of international class to the nation .
The first IIT was set up in Kharagpur, West Bengal in 1950 and it became operational on August 18, 1951.
Later on, many IITs were set up with the assistance of foreign countries.
IIT Bombay was set up in 1958 with the assistance of the Soviet Union. The IIT Madras was set up in 1959 with the assistance of Germany, IIT Kanpur in 1959 with the help of the United States and IIT Delhi in 1961 with the United Kingdom. The sixth IIT was established in Guwahati in 1994.
At present there are 23 IITs at Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, Guwahati, Roorkee, Hyderabad, Patna, Bhubaneshwar, Ropar, Jodhpur, Gandhinagar, Indore, Mandi, Varanasi, Tirupati, Palakkad, Goa, Jammu, Dharwad, Dhanbad and Bhilai.
The Institutes of Technology Act of 1961 governs the IITs in India.The act defines them as the "Institutions of national importance". The act makes IITs an autonomous institute under the Union Ministry of Education and lays down their powers, duties, framework for governance, etc.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is an Arab country located in the Arabian peninsula of West Asia . Seven emirates came together to form the present UAE.
It consists of Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Dubai, Ajman, Umm al-Qaywayn, Ras al-Khaimah and Al-Fujayrah.
