Hockey India has announced a new look national men’s hockey squad, led by Harmanpreet Singh for the 8th Men’s Asian Champions Trophy 2024. The 8th Men’s Asian Champions Trophy 2024 will be held at Hulunbuir City, Inner Mongolia, People’s Republic of China, from 8-17 September 2024.
India is the defending champion of the Men’s Asian Champions Trophy, having won the 7th edition in Chennai in 2023.
The 8th Asian Hockey Champions Trophy is the first major assignment for the national hockey team after winning the bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Many of the bronze-winning 2024 Paris Olympics players have been rested, and new players have been selected.
The in-form Indian Captain, Harmanpreet Singh, who was the leading goal scorer at the 2024 Paris Olympics, will lead the Indian team. Midfielder Vivek Sagar Prasad has been named vice-captain of the team.
This is the first time the Indian hockey team will play without its legendary goalkeeper, PR Sreejesh, who retired after the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The Indian team coach is Craig Fulton.
The men’s Champions Trophy is a six-nation hockey tournament where the six top-ranked Asian hockey teams participate.
China, India, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, and Pakistan are participating in the 8th edition.
Each team will play with one another in a round-robin format. The top four teams will play the semi-final, and the semi-final winner will play the final on 17 September 2024.
The men’s Asian Hockey Champions Trophy has been organised by the Asian Hockey Federation since 2011. India is the most successful team in the men’s Asian Hockey Champions Trophy, with four title wins, followed by Pakistan, with three title wins.
