BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2023: Mary Earps wins award

England goalkeeper Mary Earps has been named the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year for 2023. Cricketer Stuart Broad was the runner-up, while Heptathlete Katrina Johnson-Thompson finished third. These winners were decided by the public vote.

Mary Earps is the second consecutive female footballer to win the BBC award. Earps is also the third woman to win the award in three years. This is the first time such a sequence has occurred in the long-running competition since the 1960s.
In the year 2021, this award was received by tennis player Emma Raducanu.
Beth Mead was awarded BBC Sports Personality of the Year for 2022. Beth Mead lifted England's first major women's football trophy by defeating Germany in the final at Wembley.
Stuart Broad came second in the public vote. Stuart Broad finished his international career with 604 Test wickets for England. Stuart Broad announced his retirement from cricket on 7 November 2023 after winning the final Test of the Ashes series.
Johnson-Thompson won the gold medal at the 2023 World Athletics Championships, held in Budapest this year. Johnson-Thompson did not participate in the Tokyo Olympics due to injury.
This is the 70th edition of the BBC's annual awards ceremony.
