Andaman and Nicobar Islands becomes first Union Territory to be corona free

  • Andaman and Nicobar Islands has become the first state or Union territory in the country to become Covid-19 free with active cases falling to zero in the islands। 
  • Health ministry’s website reported that the last four infected persons in Andaman and Nicobar Islands have been declared cured। 
  • The UT had reported a total of 4,932 cases and 62 deaths from the virus।
  • The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a union territory, are a group of 836 objects, with 572 of them islands of which 38 are inhabited at the juncture of the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea।

‘Aatmanirbharta’ named as Oxford Hindi word of 2020

  • ‘Aatmanirbharta’ implying self-reliance has been named by Oxfordas its Hindi word of the year 2020 as it “validated the day-to-day achievements of the countless Indians who dealt with and survived the perils of a pandemic।”
  • The word was chosen by an advisory panel of language experts Kritika Agrawal, Poonam Nigam Sahay and Imogen Foxell।”
  • The Oxford Hindi word of the year is a word or expression that is chosen to reflect the ethos, mood, or preoccupations of the passing year, and have lasting potential as a term of cultural significance।

NASA appoints Indian-American scientist Bhavya Lal as acting chief of staff

  • Indian-American Bhavya Lal was appointed by NASA as the acting chief of staff of the US space agency yesterday। 
  • In a statement, NASA said Lal brings extensive experience in engineering and space technology, serving as a member of the research staff at the Institute for Defence Analyses Science  and Technology Policy Institute (STPI) from 2005 to 2020। 
  • There, she led analysis of space technology, strategy, and policy for the White House office of science and technology policy and national space council, as well as federal space-oriented organisations, including NASA, the department of defence, and the intelligence community
