The Romanian Constitutional Court upheld the election of pro-European Union (EU) leader Nicusor Dan as the winner of the Presidential election held in the country on 18 May 2025. The court rejected the election petition of his rival, George Simion, who lost the election.

George Simion had alleged interference by France and Moldova in the election processes, favouring Nicusor Dan.

Nicusor Dan will be sworn in as the President of Romania on 26 May 2025 for a five-year term.

Presidential Election In Romania 

An election was held in Romania on 4th May 2025 to elect a new President after the Romanian Constitutional Court annulled the last Presidential election, held in November 2024. Far-right and pro-Russian candidate Calin Georgescu had won the election, but it was cancelled on the allegation of Russian interference and election fraud. 

In the 4th May 2025 election, none of the candidates was able to secure a majority. George Simion, who led the Alliance for the Union of Romanians, secured 40.96% of the vote, while the Bucharest Mayor, Nicusor Dan, got around 21% votes.

Presidential Runoff election 

A Presidential runoff election was held on 18 May, where George Simion faced Nicusor Dan.

In the Presidential run-off, Nicusor Dan secured 54 % of the votes and won the election.

However, George Simion challenged the election result in the Romanian Constitutional Court, but the Court upheld Nicusor Dan's election.

Nicusor Dan is a pro-European Union supporter and is in favour of giving continued support to Ukraine in its war against Russia.

George Simion wanted to end military support to Ukraine and was critical of the European Union.

Constitutional System in Romania 

After the collapse of communism in Romania, a new constitution was promulgated in 1991.

Romania is a semi-presidential republic with a President who is the Head of State and a Prime Minister who is the Head of Government. Both hold executive functions.

The President is directly elected by the people for five years.

The President nominates the Prime Minister, who needs to be approved by the Romanian Parliament.

There is a bicameral Parliament whose members are elected for a term of four years under the proportional representation system
