To ensure a smooth voting process, the Election Commission of India has reduced the maximum number of voters in a polling booth to 1200 from the present 1500. On 22 May 2025, the Election Commission announced a series of measures to make the voting process accessible to voters and strengthen the Indian democratic process.
Steps announced by the Election Commission of India
- The maximum number of voters in a polling booth will be 1200.
- Polling booths will be set up in high-rise buildings and residential colonies to make voting convenient for the voters.
- The voter’s slip will now prominently display the serial and part numbers for easy identification.
- The Election Commission of India will source death data from the Registrar General of India and, after verification, remove the deceased person's name from the electoral list.
About the Election Commission of India
The Election Commission of India is an autonomous permanent constitutional body established under Article 324 of the Constitution.
It came into being on 25 January 1950, and every year, 25th January is observed as National Voters Day.
Since October 1993, the Election Commission of India has been a multi-member body with a Chief Election Commissioner and two Election Commissioners.
Function of the Election Commission of India
- It is the sole body responsible for supervising, controlling, and conducting elections to the offices of President and Vice President of India.
- It also conducts elections of the Parliament and the Legislature of every State and Union Territories of Delhi, Puducherry and Jammu and Kashmir.
- It prepares the voters' list for the election of the Parliament and the state/Union Territories legislature.
- It recognises the political parties and gives them National or State political party status based on their electoral performance.
- It gives advice to the President on the matters of disqualification of the members of the Parliament under certain provisions of the constitution.
- Similarly it advises the Governor of a state in case of disqualification of the member of the state legislature under certain provisions of the constitutions.
- The advice of the Election Commission is binding on the President and Governors.
