Yogi inaugurates South Asia's largest ammunition facility in Kanpur

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated an ammunition facility in Kanpur on 26 February 2024. This facility to be set up in Kanpur is being constructed by Adani Defense and Aerospace (ADA). The facility to be set up by ADA is the largest integrated ammunition manufacturing complex in South Asia.

• On this occasion, Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Pande and other senior officers of defense forces and UP government were present.
• The inauguration of the facilities coincided with the 5th anniversary of the Balakot air strike, famously known as 'Operation Bandar'.

Two big plants for ammunition and missile manufacturing in Kanpur:

• Adani Group has announced the opening of two big ammunition and missile manufacturing plants in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh in the defense manufacturing sector. The largest defense manufacturing complex in South Asia. It will have state-of-the-art facilities. This is the first step of its kind in the private sector in India. This will provide a significant boost to the country's self-reliance and technological progress in defence.
• Adani Defense and Aerospace invested more than Rs 3000 crore in the development of these factories spread over 500 acres.

Adani Group will manufacture many types of ammunition:

• Ammunition will be manufactured here. This Adani Group company focuses on the unmanned segment, counter drones, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance technology and cyber defence sector. The first of its kind state-of-the-art plants in the private sector in India will promote self-reliance and technological progress in the defence sector.

Defence Manufacturing Corridor to be built in Uttar Pradesh:

• At our first Investors Summit in 2018, PM Modi announced the creation of two defense manufacturing corridors in India.
• Keeping in mind the goal of India being self-reliant in the defense sector, the Defense Manufacturing Corridor was announced in Tamil Nadu and UP.
• The Prime Minister had announced 6 nodes in UP. This includes Aligarh, Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow, Jhansi and Chitrakoot.
• In which Adani Defence System and Technology Limited has started its work in Kanpur node.

Big corridors for defense manufacturing in UP:

• Progress has been made in developing a vast 5000-hectare corridor for defense manufacturing in Uttar Pradesh. So far 5000 acres of land has been acquired. Mainly the following companies are working in this:
  • BrahMos Limited in Lucknow
  • Bharat Dynamics Limited, Arm Vehicle Corporation Limited and Tata Technology Limited, Global Engineering Limited and WV Electronics India Limited in Jhansi.
  • Anchor Research Lab LLP in Aligarh Node
  • Adani Defense System and Technology Limited in Kanpur.

4000 people will get employment:

• Karan Adani, Chief Executive Officer of Adani Ports and SEZ Limited, said that it is ready in 500 acres in just 15 months.
• It has the capability to manufacture 150 million rounds of ammunition annually.
• This facility will produce bullets for rifles, light machine guns (LMG), AK-47s, and carbines.
• After this, artillery guns, ammunition, cannon and hand grenades will be made in the next phase. Besides, different types of weapons and facilities related products will be manufactured for the army personnel.
• This project, initially funded with Rs 1500 crore, will expand to Rs 3000 crore over the next five years.
• This will provide direct employment to 4000 people. At the same time, this complex will also generate five times more indirect employment.
• The complex will also use solar power and waste management technology for its energy needs.

This facility is spread over 500 acres:

• Spanning 500 acres, the facility is poised to become one of Kanpur's largest integrated ammunition manufacturing complexes.
• It will produce high quality small, medium and large-caliber ammunition for the armed forces, paramilitary forces and police.
• The facility has begun production of small-caliber ammunition. It starts with 150 million rounds, which is 25 percent of India's total annual requirement.

ADA made big investment in Uttar Pradesh:

• Adani Defence and Aerospace (ADA) made the biggest investment in the Uttar Pradesh Defense Corridor. It will play an important role in developing a vibrant defense ecosystem. It is encouraging to start operations within 18 months of land allotment.
