‘World Meteorological Day’ is celebrated every year on 23 March. On this occasion, attention is paid to the Earth's environment and the behavior of the people associated with it. It is a global event celebrated to commemorate the establishment of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

Objective of World Meteorological Day (WMD):

  • The main objective of celebrating this day every year is to make people aware about meteorology and the continuous changes taking place in it.

Theme of World Meteorological Day 2024:

  • The WMO has been commemorating World Meteorological Day with a unique theme chosen annually. The theme of ‘WMD’ this year in 2024 is “At the frontline of climate action”.
  • The theme of World Meteorological Day (WMD) 2023 was "The future of weather, climate and water across generations."
  • The theme of WMD 2022 was "Early Warning and Early Action".
  • The theme of World Meteorological Day 2021 was ‘Oceans, our climate and weather’. This topic focuses on connecting the ocean, climate and weather within the Earth system. The theme also marks the inaugural year of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030).

History of World Meteorological Day:

  • It was established by the WMO on 23 March 1950 to commemorate the coming into force of the 'World Meteorological Organization Convention'. 
  • World Meteorological Day was first celebrated in 1951. Since 1951 it has become an annual event. WMD is a day dedicated to celebrating the accomplishments of the WMO and its member countries in the domains of meteorology and hydrology. The occasion marks the day to raise awareness about the importance of weather and climate-related information and to promote international cooperation in these areas.

  • WMO originated from the International Meteorological Organization (IMO). It was established in 1873 to exchange weather information internationally.
  • Hence WMO was established in 1873 by the International Meteorological Organization.

  • On March 23, 1950, the World Meteorological Organization became a specialized organization of the United Nations.
